The Essen-Kray Nord train station is now an S-Bahn station in the Kray district of Essen . Along with the younger Essen-Kray Süd stop on the Essen – Bochum long-distance line, it is one of two train stations with passenger services in Essen-Kray.
history
After the route of the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft from Kray to Gelsenkirchen was opened for freight traffic on February 13, 1872, passenger traffic followed on April 16, 1872. In 1876, Kray was renamed Kray Nord between 1880 and 1897 - since the Essen-Kray Süd stop on the Essen – Bochum long-distance line was opened in 1896 - the second largest coal transshipment station of the Rheinische Bahn. From the beginning it was also used by the neighboring Bonifacius colliery . In 1907 the tunnel to the island platform was completed.
After Kray was incorporated into the city of Essen in 1929, the station was called Essen-Kray Nord from May 14, 1950 .
In 1959, passenger traffic on the route from Kray Nord to Mülheim- Heißen was discontinued. In 1965 the section between Kray Nord and Bochum-President followed . A second platform, built north of the first island platform and accessible via ramps, has served the only hourly hourly trains of the S-Bahn line S 2 that stopped in Kray Nord since June 1991. Before that, local trains between Essen and Münster served the station. The access to the first platform, south of the one currently in operation, is bricked up. With the cessation of freight traffic on the route to Bochum-President and the closure of this route in 2004, the station lost its status as a branch station. The rest of the stretch of the Rheinische Bahn is still the station track as far as Essen-Nord, here the overhead line was also dismantled in 2004.
The station building from 1875 was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Essen in 1991. In its representative design, it shows that special emphasis was placed on the then emerging coal region; nevertheless, access to the platform is no longer through the station building.
Todays situation
The station is served by the S-Bahn line S2 (timetable route 450.2) for local rail passenger transport. It is on the Essen – Gelsenkirchen railway line .
It has the abbreviation EEKN in the operating point directory of Deutsche Bahn and falls into station category 6.
Today the Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque is located in the reception building .
In addition, it is very centrally located compared to the Essen-Kray Süd stop , as the northern end of the Krayer town center connects here.
