The trolleybus Koblenz was the catenary bus system of the city of Koblenz . It was initially used as a replacement for the disused Koblenz tram routes , especially in the network on the right bank of the Rhine. From the 1960s, the left bank of the Rhine was also closed in favor of the trolleybus. As early as 1970, however, the trolleybuses were in turn replaced by omnibuses .

history

The first Koblenz trolleybus line was set up in October 1942 instead of the tram line to Höhr-Grenzhausen , which was closed in July 1941 , as the line was in need of renovation and repairs seemed too expensive. Another was built in 1949 by the Herz-Jesu-Kirche zur Karthauser .

After the Pfaffendorfer Bridge was destroyed in the war and then only rebuilt for road traffic, the Koblenz tram network was divided into two halves and was gradually converted to trolleybuses, especially on the right bank of the Rhine, in the 1950s. On July 18, 1953, a trolleybus line was opened from the main train station over the Pfaffendorfer Bridge and Ehrenbreitstein to Vallendar . Tram traffic on the right bank of the Rhine ended on September 29, 1958.

Most of the tram lines on the left bank of the Rhine had also been shut down and replaced by bus lines, so that in the end only lines 1 and 2 remained, which in the narrow streets of the city center could not be converted to trolleybus or bus service. They were shut down on July 19, 1967 without replacement.

Beginning with the trolleybus route to Karthauser in 1968, the trolleybus routes were converted to bus services only a short time later. Just three years after the last tram, the trolleybus operation also ended on October 30, 1970.
