history

Continuous settlement that has not been interrupted to this day can be assumed for Menden since the Franconian times. The settlement advance came from the Rhine , not from the uninhabited and desolate mountainous region in the east or south.

In the Siegburg Bay and on the edge of the mountainous country there were a number of castles, including Menden Castle, from which the Sieg could be controlled.

Only in the 11th century can the history of Menden be traced in the following situation: The land and people in Siegburg Bay belonged to the church and the nobility. The house of the Rhenish Count Palatine stands out among this. Today's Michaelsberg and the adjacent area certainly belonged to it. The old church of Menden was also in the hands of the Count Palatine. It was built in the middle of the 12th century, a so-called single-nave hall church with a four- story choir tower , in which the choir was located below. After several extensions and additions, the church was demolished in 1896 because it was in disrepair. The new Catholic parish church of St. Augustine was built between 1890 and 1892.

However, there were also assumptions about an earlier building history of the church, which was confirmed by excavations in 1986/87: A previous building, a wooden church, is found due to discoloration in the earth. The chemical examination of the oldest grave find, a skeleton, has proven that Menden owned a wooden church as early as the 8th century, during the local Christianization period. The foundation walls of the "old Menden church" have been built up. The various construction phases can be understood using the floor plans. Old grave crosses, mostly from the 18th century, from the cemetery that was next to the old church, are still in the vicinity of the complex today.

Menden consisted of Niedermenden and Obermenden, probably two villication districts in different hands, which developed into two villages. In 1935 they were combined to form the municipality of Menden (Rhineland) .

The inhabitants lived, miserably like all rural dwellers in the Middle Ages , as unfree workers and artisans at the manor houses. This remained so until the 19th century. It was not until industrialization in the Siegburg-Troisdorf area that life in the village changed fundamentally.

During the municipal reorganization of the Bonn area ( Bonn Law ), the municipality of Menden (Rhineland) was combined with all municipalities of the Menden office except Holzlar on August 1, 1969 to form the municipality of Sankt Augustin . Friedrich-Wilhelms-Hütte , which until then belonged to the municipality of Menden, was assigned to Troisdorf .

Public transport

Menden is connected to the rest of Sankt Augustin and the neighboring cities of Bonn , Siegburg , Hennef (Sieg) , Troisdorf and Cologne through its 16 bus stops, one DB stop, three bus lines and two train lines. In addition, you can use the train lines without changing u. a. Reach Mönchengladbach , Königswinter , Linz am Rhein , Neuwied and Koblenz . The current railway bridge has replaced the previous bridge from Sankt Augustin-Menden to Troisdorf-Friedrich-Wilhelms-Hütte since the end of the Second World War.

Street

Main streets

There are two main streets through Menden. The Siegstraße ( L 143 ) branches off from the B 56 in the center of Sankt Augustin and runs on the eastern edge through Menden to Troisdorf. At a roundabout in the south of Menden, this meets the second main road. Meindorfer Strasse ( L 16 ) leads from Siegstrasse on the southern edge through Menden and continues through Sankt Augustin-Meindorf to Bonn.

Federal highways

The A 59 motorway runs along the western edge and the A 560 motorway at the northern edge . The latter has a motorway exit for Menden, which ends in Einsteinstraße, which was expanded to 4 lanes at the end of 2005 in order to be able to cope better with the oncoming traffic at this traffic junction. At this point the A 560, the B 56 (which is briefly interrupted and continued there) and the commercial center of Menden meet.

Current construction projects

Two major construction projects are currently being implemented in Menden. On the one hand, the existing railway line, which currently consists of two tracks, has been expanded to three tracks since around 2017. This is necessary because the already congested route will soon also be used by the S 13 railway line, which currently only runs to Troisdorf . For this reason, not only has the line to be expanded by one track, but an additional Victory Bridge must be built next to the old one. On the other hand, the existing platform will be modernized and adapted to a S-Bahn. Due to the additional stop of the S 13, the stop of the lines RB 27 and RE 8, and thus a connection without changing to Koblenz and Mönchengladbach, is in question.

The old Melan arch bridge is also to be replaced by a new building (planning approval 3rd quarter 2018 [obsolete] ).
