history

Former municipality coat of arms of Rübenach

Settlements in the area of today's Rübenach can be traced back to the Neolithic Age . There is no scientifically clear explanation for the origin of the place name Rübenach. It is most likely that it is the Latinized version of a Gallic proper name. Accordingly, "Rubiniacum" was located here, translated the settlement of "Rubinius". During the construction of the A 48 in 1939/40 and 1966, large Franconian row grave fields were uncovered northwest of the town . The more than a thousand graves counting fields can be dated between the 5th and 7th centuries.

The district of Koblenz was first mentioned in 775 in the “ Breviarium Sancti Lulli ” as “Ribenahcho”, which was the oldest property register of the Hersfeld monastery . At that time, a chapel that was located in Rübenach was donated by the Archbishop of Mainz, Lullus, to Charlemagne , who passed the donation on to the newly founded Hersfeld Monastery.

A falsified document from King Arnulf of Carinthia , in which Rübenach was donated to the St. Maximin Abbey in Trier in 888 , led to a legal dispute over the details of the donation that lasted for years. Ultimately, the donation was renewed or confirmed several times. B. 962 by Emperor Otto I or 1031 by Pope Leo IX. In the 12th century, the counts of Luxembourg exercised bailiff law over church property . First as an imperial fief , then from 1147 as a fief of the Archbishop of Trier. At the beginning of the 14th century, the " von Eltz " family inherited the bailiwick. The castle home of this family was first mentioned in the 1200th

Since 1419 Rübenach has belonged to the Electorate of Trier and came to the office of mountain maintenance . Until the French occupation in 1794 and the subsequent dissolution of the electoral state and the secularization of the ecclesiastical properties, the bailiwick law remained in the hands of the von Eltz family. In the French period, the place gave the canton Rübenach within the Arrondissement de Coblence its name and belonged to the Mairie Bassenheim . After the takeover by Prussia in 1815, he came to the Koblenz district .

In 1220 a church was built in Rübenach for the first time. In 1866 it had to give way to the new Mauritius church after a church dispute. The church tower of the church planned by Johann Claudius von Lassaulx in 1846 and completed by Vincenz Statz from 1862 to 1866 still shapes the image of Rübenach and is the landmark of the district. The church was badly damaged in an air raid in 1942.

In 1841 a serious fire broke out in the village. When the fire lasted three days, almost all of Rübenach was destroyed by the flames. A station building was inaugurated in 1907 after Rübenach was connected to the Koblenz-Mayen railway line in 1904 . The trains ran on this route until it was closed in 1983. Rübenach was incorporated into the city of Koblenz on November 7, 1970. In 1975 Rübenach celebrated its 1200th anniversary.
