The war memorial in Koblenz-Rübenach

The war memorial in the Koblenz district of Rübenach was erected in 1913 in memory of those who fell in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871 . The war memorial was set up in a central location in the village and has since been changed or supplemented several times. It is a typical example of the patriotic monuments of the imperial era and was supposed to bring empire and emperor as a source in the center of the place. Today it also serves as a memorial to those who died in the two world wars of the 20th century.

construction

The Rübenach war memorial was designed as a fountain from black basalt lava . The central element is a Prussian eagle sitting on a hemisphere with flared wings. From here, water flows from three taps into a small semicircular basin and from there into a larger semicircular basin below. The words " Rübenach seine Helden " are affixed to the lower basin . Bronzed reliefs can be seen on both sides of the hemisphere : on the left is Emperor Friedrich III in the right profile. , on the opposite, right-hand side, the portrait of his father, Kaiser Wilhelm I, is preserved in the left profile. On the plinth under the hemisphere is the saying " God with us ", with which the soldiers went to the First World War on their belt locks .

The wall behind the eagle with capitals and frieze is crowned by a semicircular circle with an iron cross . In addition to the lower water basin, there is a low stele on the right and left with the years "1914" and "1918" in stylized wreaths. After the Second World War, these steles were supplemented by inscription panels with the Iron Cross and the dates 1914–1918 and 1939–1945. On the wall behind the eagle a bronze inscription plaque now shows the words " The heroic deaths died 1866–1870 / 71 ", followed by the names of the four Rübenach soldiers who fell. On the back wall of the monument, the names of those who took part in the First World War were “immortalized” in bronze letters; as a number of letters have since been stolen, their names are no longer legible.

Monument protection

The war memorial is a protected cultural monument under the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) and entered in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It is located in Koblenz-Rübenach on Aachener Strasse at the corner of Alte Strasse .
