Logo Lahn-Eifel-Bahn

The Lahn-Eifel-Bahn is a product of the local rail transport , which runs as RB 23 from Limburg an der Lahn via Koblenz and Andernach to Mayen , as RE 25 from Gießen via Limburg to Koblenz and as RB 38 from Andernach via Mayen to Kaisersesch .

It runs on the Lahntalbahn , the left Rhine route and the Eifelquerbahn .

It was created with the Rhineland-Palatinate cycle in 2015 for the timetable change in December 2014 by linking the Lahntalbahn with the Pellenz-Eifel-Bahn . The decisive advantage of this concept is that for the places along the Pellenz-Eifel route to Mayen, there is a connection to the Koblenz regional center without having to change trains and that the Lahntalbahn trains can also reach the Koblenz-Stadtmitte stop.

The Lahn-Eifel-Bahn was part of lot 1 of the Eifel-Westerwald-Sieg diesel network, for which DB Regio AG, Regio Südwest was awarded the contract. The contract runs until December 2030.

RB 23

Limburg – Koblenz section

The RB 23 runs in this section every hour and starts at minute 45 in Limburg.

Monday to Friday, the first trip takes place at 4:45 a.m., Saturday at 5:45 a.m. and Sunday at 6:45 a.m. The hourly service ends at 8:45 p.m., after that there are trips at 10:45 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays at 11:45 p.m.

Mondays to Fridays, the rush hour offer is enhanced by trips at 5:15, 6:15, 6:28, 7:15 and 13:15 from Limburg.

Due to problems with platform occupancy in Koblenz main station, it has only been possible since December 2016 to connect all trains on the Lahntalbahn in the direction of Andernach in Koblenz.

Section Koblenz – Mayen

The RB 23 runs in this section every hour and starts at minute .52 in Koblenz main station.

The first trip starts at 7:52 a.m. in Koblenz and the last at 9:52 p.m., on Fridays and Sundays there is an additional trip at 11:52 p.m. from Koblenz. Monday to Friday there is also a trip at 5:52 a.m. and Monday to Saturday a trip at 7:21 a.m. from Koblenz, both of which end in Andernach.

Due to the school traffic, the daily trip from Koblenz ends at 12:52 in Andernach. With a few exceptions, the RB 23 has also stopped in Weißenthurm since December 2016.

Mayen – Koblenz section

The RB 23 runs in this section every hour and starts at minute 17 in Mayen Ost.

The first trip starts Monday to Saturday at 5:17 a.m. and on Sundays at 6:17 a.m. in Mayen Ost, the last trip starts daily at 9:17 p.m. The last trip from Andernach towards Limburg (Lahn) takes place from Sunday to Friday at 10:48 p.m. Due to the school traffic, there are intermittent stops twice a day from Monday to Friday, so that these trains do not leave Mayen Ost until 7:28 a.m. and 1:34 p.m. respectively.

As a special feature, the journeys begin Monday to Friday at 6:17 a.m. and 7:28 a.m. (from Mayen East) in Kaisersesch and Monday to Friday at 1:34 p.m. (from Mayen East) in Mayen West. On weekends, the journey has already ended in Mayen Ost since December 2018.

Unlike in the opposite direction, all journeys to Limburg have been linked since the start of operations. With the exception of the trains that run outside the regular schedule, there has also been a stop in Weißenthurm since December 2016.

Section Koblenz – Limburg

The RB 23 runs every hour in this section and usually starts at minute .09 in Koblenz Hauptbahnhof.

Mondays to Fridays, the first run is at 4:40 a.m., Saturday at 6:09 a.m. and Sunday at 7:09 a.m. The regular hourly service ends at 10:09 p.m. Thereafter, there is a daily departure from Andernach at 11:10 p.m. except on Saturdays and a trip starting at 0:09 a.m. from Koblenz main station on Saturdays and Sundays. Due to the school traffic, there are interruptions in the intervals twice a day, so that the trains do not leave Koblenz main station until 8:26 a.m. and 2:28 p.m.

Mondays to Fridays, the offer is increased during rush hour with trips at 1:39 PM, 4:36 PM, 5:36 PM and 6:37 PM from Koblenz main station.

In addition, since December 2015 there have been two pairs of trains at lunchtime that only go to Bad Ems . These trains then go back to Koblenz after a short turn . These trains offer two trains per hour between Koblenz main station and Bad Ems between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. together with the regular trains on lines RE 25 and RB 23 (with Koblenz-Limburg repeater).

RE 25

LINT 27 double traction as Lahntalexpress (RE 25) towards Gießen in Limburg (Lahn) station

Since the introduction of the Lahn-Eifel-Bahn , the former Lahntalexpress ( RE 25 ) from Koblenz main station to Gießen has also been run under this name. These trains run every two hours and serve the intermediate stops Niederlahnstein , Bad Ems , Nassau (Lahn) , Diez , Limburg (Lahn) , Weilburg and Wetzlar .

The trains leave Koblenz main station every even hour at minute .58 and are thus integrated into the zero node there. The first departure is daily at 6:58 a.m., the last at 6:58 p.m.

In Limburg (Lahn) there is a connection to the RE 20 from Monday to Friday as well as daily from the RB 22 from Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof . In Gießen there is a connection to the HLB ( RE 98/99 ) towards Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof, Siegen Hauptbahnhof and Kassel Hauptbahnhof as well as the Mittelhessen-Express ( RB 40/41 ) to Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof, Dillenburg and Treysa .

In the opposite direction, departures in Gießen take place in odd hours at the minute .16, Monday to Saturday between 7:16 am and 9:16 pm, and on Sundays between 9:16 am and 9:16 pm.

criticism

Before the timetable change in December 2014, the Lahntalexpress was operated with class 612 trains with active tilting technology . These trains drove faster through the winding Lahn valley .

The trains that are now used without tilting technology are slower. Although no longer stops in Eschhofen , the trains in Koblenz Hauptbahnhof leave six minutes earlier, which means shorter transfer times. Due to the poor acceleration of the trains, delays can no longer be made up. At the start of operations, there were also some irregularities in operation due to vehicle passports, as trains with insufficient capacity or were running late.

RB 38

LINT 27 double traction as RB 38 in Kaisersesch

The RB 38 runs every hour between 8:28 a.m. and 12:28 p.m. and between 2:36 p.m. and 9:36 p.m. from Kaisersesch to Andernach, with the last trip of the day already ending in Mayen Ost.

There are also trains from Mayen East Monday to Friday at 4:55 a.m. and 6:56 a.m., and from Mayen West daily at 7:48 a.m. and 1:34 p.m.

In Andernach, the trips start daily at 7:29 a.m., between 8:27 a.m. and 12:27 a.m. and every hour between 1:35 p.m. and 10:35 p.m., with the trip at 12:27 a.m. already in Mayen West and the trip ends at 10:35 p.m. in Mayen Ost. Mondays to Fridays, the journey ends at 1:35 p.m. from Andernach in Mayen Ost.

There are also trips from Andernach to Kaisersesch on Mondays to Fridays at 5:47 a.m. and 1:03 p.m. and to Mayen Ost on Saturdays and Sundays at 6:15 a.m.

The line is single-track between Mendig and Kaisersesch, the only possible crossing is at Mayen Ost station. Due to the associated restrictions, the connection in Andernach can either only be made to or only from the Rhein-Express . The timetable is designed so that the connection to Andernach can be reached in the morning and the connection to the Rhein-Express in the afternoon .

The trains usually arrive on platform 3 in Andernach, are then moved and then made available on platform 24 for the return journey, as a turning time of just three minutes would be too short. An exception is the trip that arrives at 7:24 a.m. and returns directly at 7:29 a.m., omitting the Miesenheim and Plaidt stops.

vehicles

On the Lahn-Eifel train of the series 640 (be DMUs Alstom Coradia LINT 27 ), 643 ( Bombardier Talent ) and 648 ( Alstom Coradia LINT 41 ) are used.

The vehicles of the series 640 and 648 (LINT) were used on the Dreiländerbahn network before the timetable change and were stationed in Siegen Hauptbahnhof .

In addition, Talent class 643 railcars are used, which were in service with the DB Regio NRW until 2014 .

All vehicles have seats with tables in first class and folding tables in second class. Each vehicle has a barrier-free toilet and one (series 640) or two (series 643 and 648) multi-purpose compartments .

All trains are under video surveillance for safety. In addition, drives on all trains from 19 clock conductor with. Smoke alarms were also installed in all trains for the timetable change.

In normal operation, the trains usually run in single units. At rush hour , some trips are also driven in double traction. The class 640 multiple units often run in double traction even in normal operation.
