Bartolomeo Felici

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bartolomeo Felici (* 1695 in Florence ; † June 12, 1776 ibid) was an Italian composer and organist. He worked as Kapellmeister in Florence and composed mainly oratorios and other sacred music. He was the father of the composer Alessandro Felici .

Life

Bartolomeo Felici probably studied with Giovanni Maria Casini (1652–1719). Since he is referred to as "Abate" on some title pages, it is believed that he received the minor orders . He worked most of his life as a bandmaster and organist at the Church of San Marco in Florence. There he also founded a well-attended school for composition and organ. His son Alessandro also taught at this school. Her students included Luigi Cherubini . Felici's great importance for the Florentine musical life of that time was also appreciated by his contemporaries.

Felici wrote mainly sacred compositions. In addition to San Marco, some of his works have also been performed in the Florentine Church of San Pier Maggiore and in Bologna. His compositional style was learned and resourceful. Many of his works have been lost because the estate was sold by the heirs in 1778.
