The Werdau railway station is an operating agency of the Leipzig-Hof railway and the branching here since 2000 disused railway line Werdau-Mehltheuer on the city of Werdau in West Saxon district of Zwickau .
history
The station was opened in 1845. The line to Bavaria runs across the arched triangle south of the station in the direction of Reichenbach (Vogtland), Hof, Munich and Allgäu as well as Zwickau, Chemnitz and Dresden.
In 1876 the branching line to Wünschendorf was opened, also known as the Thuringian Forest Railway. A new station building was erected for this purpose in 1877, and an extension was added in 1907. It has a stucco-decorated dining room, railway houses, a baggage station and a rail post station, and there were keepers' houses.
Around 1900 the station was rebuilt and the line to Wünschendorf was relocated. Instead of coming from the south, it was introduced into the station from the north, and a flyover structure was also built in the north, with a track on the line to Wünschendorf crossing the Plauen – Leipzig line.
Werdau became the focal point, an important center with a railway depot and wagon construction . There was also a locomotive shed. Werdau blossomed into a leading industrial city.
In 1999 the passenger traffic to Wünschendorf was stopped. As a result, the shutdown was carried out. The overpass structure north of the station was removed, no bridge was built over the bypass road, so that the route between Werdau West and Werdau is interrupted today.
In 1999 an electronic signal box was put into operation and the historic station building was partially renovated by 2003. The Mitropahalle with its numerous stucco decorations, wood paneling on the walls and three large, old station clocks have been preserved in the original. The long wooden walkway from the early years of railway operations was provided with an inserted false ceiling, which hides the historic wooden ceilings. The former luggage storage and Royal Railway Post Office became a bistro and newsagent. In the passageway, the former ticket office gave way to a new ticket point, which had been run as a junior company. Elevators and new toilet facilities were installed in the building. Offices and control rooms were newly expanded. New platforms went into operation, which are designed for ICE trains and were built with extra length for the interregional train stops in Werdau on the way to Oberstdorf / Allgäu.
In December 2013, a large welcome party took place in the historic Mitropahalle on the occasion of the first stop of the Central German S-Bahn in Werdau. Organized and implemented by the Agenda Group Environment and Transport Werdau, the first arriving S-Bahn was welcomed by citizens of the city at 6.11 a.m.
In 2014, the city council passed a resolution according to which the historic station building should give way to a stop with public transport, with construction costs totaling just over three million euros. In the same year, again at the initiative of the Environment and Transport Agenda Group, the historic Mitropahalle was used for "talk in the train station". From 2015, one of the first electromobility days took place and, in consultation with the German Foundation for Monument Protection, the Open Monument Day. The monument protection of the station was lifted in 2016. Many citizens have campaigned for the preservation of the station building in a petition. In 2016 the citizens' association Wir was founded in Werdau Süd .
The association as well as numerous other initiatives, for example students from the city of Werdau, are committed to the preservation and use of the historic station building as a cultural asset of the industrial culture area Chemnitz - Zwickau, as proposed by students of the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences and recorded in the INSEK (Integrated Urban Development Concept).
The demolition of the station building was announced in early 2020. Preparatory measures for construction will be carried out by the end of the year, and the actual demolition and redesign of the area is planned for 2021. A total of 3.5 million euros will be invested, of which the municipality will contribute 600,000 euros.
investment
The track access is through the historic station hall. In 2000, the direct track access to track 1, the forest platform, was removed and Werdau's train station with platforms (tracks 1–4 with only existing access through the station hall) were modernized. Before the modern expansion, direct access to the tracks and also through the station hall was possible. New doors, windows, floors, false ceilings, a handicapped-accessible toilet, a new heating system, new ticket issuance and machines as well as the renovated retail space in the former luggage storage were created by the year 2000.
Regular events take place in and around the station building, which is the starting point for city tours by private providers and initiatives, to stimulate the city's cultural life.
Connection
In the 2019 timetable, Werdau will be served by the S5 and S5X lines of the S-Bahn Central Germany (Halle (Saale) Hbf – Zwickau (Sachs) Hbf) and the RB2 line of the Vogtlandbahn (Zwickau (Sachs) Hbf – Cheb). The trains on the RB2 line change direction in Werdau. Werdau was also approached by the Central German Regiobahn (MRB) on the route to Dresden in 2019. For several years, historical steam trains have been stopping for nostalgic trips from various providers.
Werdau already has direct bus stops in front of the historic station building. Every day three to four buses stop in front of the building directly on the footpath to get off directly in front of the station concourse door. There are also bus stops for getting off directly in front of the former dining room. There are also several large covered bus stops and a covered taxi stand directly in front of the historic train station.
There are around 50 parking spaces at the station building. State road 289, which is not directly accessible, runs west of the station.
