The branch Werdau Bogendreieck is as Gleisdreieck executed branching point in Werdau in West Saxony , where Dresden-Werdau railway (with kilometer 135.96) in the Leipzig-Hof railway opens.

There are gardens in the area of the arched triangle, but no train station or stop, which means that direct transfers are not possible at this point. Travelers can change trains in different directions in Werdau , Zwickau , Lichtentanne , Reichenbach im Vogtland or Neumark (Sachs) .

history

With the completion of the line from Leipzig to Werdau ( Leipzig – Hof line ) built by the Saxon-Bavarian Railway Company (from 1847: Saxon-Bavarian State Railway ) on September 6, 1845, the 8.10 km long branch to Zwickau was also included put into operation. With the further commissioning of the route in the direction of Reichenbach on May 31, 1846, the later curved triangle went into operation as a simple junction.

For connection to the 1855 opened Albert Bahn from Dresden three different connection points had been considered initially. For coal traffic from the Lugau-Oelsnitzer district , the Werdau or Gößnitz stations were considered to be important connection points. Werdau was ideally located to direct trains south towards Hof , but Gößnitz seemed favorable for the route to Leipzig. As a third variant, Crimmitschau was investigated as a connection point at the time . Ultimately, the decision was made to route to Zwickau and a connecting railway to Gößnitz that branches off in Schönbörnchen near Glauchau . On June 25, 1855, construction of the connecting line to Gößnitz began, and on November 15, 1855, construction of the main line in the direction of Zwickau began. On November 15, 1858, the two new routes were opened. On January 1, 1856, the double-track Zwickau – Neumark connecting arch at the former Werdau junction had already gone into operation, which was now known as the Werdau triangle.

Over ten years later, on March 1, 1869, the gap between Freiberg and Flöha was closed and the continuous connection from Dresden was completed. Since then, the Werdau arched triangle has had its supraregional importance as the interface in rail traffic between Silesia and southern Germany.

At the beginning of October 1989 there were massive, violent attacks by the German People's Police on citizens who wanted to wave and cheer the trains with the refugees from the Prague embassy passing there .

Supraregional importance

The Werdau arched triangle has a national significance that extends beyond Saxony due to its connection between the Dresden – Werdau and Leipzig – Hof railway lines. It is part of the Sachsen-Franken-Magistrale and is included in the planning for the Central-Germany connection .
