Sonnenberg is a district of the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden .

The place was incorporated on October 28, 1928 and today has around 8,000 inhabitants. Sonnenberg connects to the north-east of the city center and forms a closed settlement area with it after the development has merged. The historic town center is located between the foothills of the Taunus in the narrow valley of the Salzbach tributary Rambach. The Rambach district is located northeast of Sonnenberg .

Sonnenberg is now considered an upscale residential area with many villas; the purchasing power of 31,346 euros (as of 2014) per inhabitant and year is by far the highest among the Wiesbaden districts. The castle , which towers on a mountain spur above the old town, is worth seeing . The fortifications and the city wall have largely been preserved. From the keep of the castle, one has the best view of the sun Berger valley and the old town with its ramparts.

history

The first written mention of Sonnenberg dates from the years 1208 and 1209 in the name of the first Burgmann Ulbert von Idstein-Sonnenberg as Sonnenburch and Sunnenberc (earlier mentions in the older literature refer to Schweinberg in the Odenwald). The castle was built around 1201–1203 by the Nassau counts and was first mentioned in 1221 as the Sonnenberc . 1257 there must have already been an existing local constitution, since a mayor named Godefridus is mentioned.

At the end of the 13th century, the castle was expanded when Count Adolf von Nassau (* before 1250; † July 2, 1298) was crowned Roman-German king on May 5, 1292 . In 1338 Emperor Ludwig IV visited the castle. On July 29, 1351, the Bohemian King and later Emperor Charles IV. Sonnenberg granted city rights, as a result of which the city wall was built in the following years.

A small church was built in 1429, but it fell into disrepair by 1602. The Thirty Years' War caused great damage, so that only a dozen houses were habitable. In 1672 the city was devastated by Brandenburg troops.

1814, Sonnenberg had about 600 inhabitants when Johann Wolfgang von Goethe paid a visit to the city.

Over the centuries, the creek in the valley floor has frequently overflowed its banks and sometimes caused considerable damage, particularly badly on June 25, 1867, most recently on March 28, 1999.

In 1896 a major fire raged in Sonnenberg, and the Sonnenberg volunteer fire brigade was founded.
