Frauenstein is a district of the Hessian capital Wiesbaden . The place with almost 2400 inhabitants already belongs to the Rheingau wine-growing region and therefore likes to call itself the gateway to the Rheingau .

Townscape

In the center, which extends in the narrow Lippbach Valley, stands on a rock the castle ruins with their preserved castle keep , which was built around the 1200th

Opposite the castle ruins is a small square with the Catholic Church of St. Georg and Katharina with a late Gothic choir and roof turret (1509). The new parish church, built in 1953/54, joins the old church at right angles behind it and has taken up some of the furnishings. a. a Gothic crucifix from the time the church was built, a baroque high altar from the Tiefenthal monastery (1713), a baroque pulpit (1676) from the Franciscan monastery in Hadamar and the statues of the namesake from the same era. During a restoration in 1989/90, a new altar table, ambo and Easter candlestick by Hubert Elsässer were added.

The fountain in front of the church (1978) is crowned by a sandstone sculpture of St. George.

Next to the church is a thousand-year-old linden tree that has already partially broken . It is also called the blood linden tree after a legend that a young man who is said to have kidnapped the niece of a Frauenstein lord of the castle was executed for it. The bride had the linden tree planted at this point.

One of the best-preserved half-timbered houses in the village is the Schönborn'sche Hof from 1571, on Kirschblütenstrasse directly below the castle, with remains of medieval masonry. Like the Falkersche Hof in Georgstrasse and the former Weinhaus zur Burg, it was originally built for the Burgmannen .

The tourist infrastructure includes several wineries, some with bars, vinotheques, guest houses, holiday flats and apartments.

Surroundings

The 254.5  m above sea level rises southeast of the castle ruins NHN high Spitzer Stein , on the summit of which there is an approximately 15 meter high wooden observation tower , from which there is a good view of the Rheingau.

The Nürnberger Hof , a popular excursion restaurant and winery, sits enthroned on the south-eastern flank of the mountain , from which one has a view of the Rhine and the Rheingau with its vineyards. In 1815 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stopped here during his second stay in Wiesbaden to conduct geological studies. In 1932 the citizens of Frauenstein erected a memorial to him above the vineyards: the so-called Goethestein . This is not an obelisk, as is often mistakenly assumed, but rather a tetrahedron because of its triangular base .

At the end of the village in the direction of Wiesbaden-Schierstein and Walluf , near the Grorother Hof , a European vineyard was created in which various characteristic European grape varieties are planted. They are described in more detail on boards. The Grorother Mühle used to belong to the Grorother Hof and is now in the Schierstein district.

At the end of the village in the direction of Georgenborn is the Sommerberg Castle , formerly one of the five fortified yards of the Counts of Nassau against the Mainz ore monastery , to which the Frauenstein Castle belonged , next to Grorother Hof, Hof Nürnberg , Hof Armada and Hof Rosenköppel .

In addition to wine, there are numerous cherry tree meadows around Frauenstein, which are a popular destination, especially when the cherry blossoms in spring. Behind these orchards, hiking trails lead to the Gray Stone ( 339  m ) near Georgenborn in the Nonnenbuchwald . With a height of 25 m, the gray stone belongs to a quartzite dike that was formed around 320 million years ago and extends approx. 4 km to the pointed stone . The gray stone is also used as a climbing practice rock.

Monstrance tree on the Rheinsteig

The monstrance tree, a stout oak, where, according to legend, an abbess of the Tiefenthal monastery buried the holy monstrance in the turmoil of war for fear of looting, and planted a tree for orientation next to the hiding place , once stood on a hiking car park below the Grauen Stein . But later she did not find the spot and died of exhaustion while searching. The tree grew in the shape of a monstrance. Already dead years ago, it had to be felled in 2009; the trunk is still in place.

The Rheinsteig leads past the center of Frauenstein, the Goethestein and the Grauen Stein .

A specialty for the region is the occurrence of the rare Aesculapian snake . A "snake path" was created in 2006 in the Erlenbachtal (upper reaches of the Lindenbach ) by the association Naturschutzhaus and provides information about this native, non-poisonous snake. The existing nature reserve “ Sommerberg bei Frauenstein ” was specifically designated as a refuge for the Germany-wide rare snake, which is a so-called protected species of the FFH annex list.
