The mill is located 114  m above sea level in the Rheingau in the foreland of the Taunus in a small-scale cultural landscape with viticulture , fruit growing , arable farming and grassland . The building is on the Grorother Bach between Schierstein and the neighboring village of Frauenstein , about 1 km southeast of the Grorother Hof . About 50 m below the mill, Leierbach and Grorother Bach unite to form Lindenbach .

building

The mill, which is still the oldest part of the building, was built in 1699 by the imperial Rittmeister Anton Sohlern, who founded the noble family of the Sohlern and lived in the Grorother Hof. In the early 2000s, the city of Wiesbaden sold the dilapidated building with 7600 m² of land. They were then renovated.

To the west of the mill, the “Leusert” area was initially designated as a protected area. There are eleven sparrows that were planted around 1820 and are among the oldest and largest in Central Europe. They are designated as a natural monument and, according to the city of Wiesbaden, are among the "most powerful fruit trees in the Taunus". The Grorother Mühle landscape park was later designated. This contains permanent grassland in floodplain areas, a wetted area as a herbaceous meadow , several orchards and woody plants. The area of the Grorother Mühle lies in the landscape protection area of the city of Wiesbaden and partly in a water protection area Zone II. The urban areas are looked after by the environmental agency of the city of Wiesbaden.

The mill residents keep the pastures around the mill Pustertaler Schecken , a breed of domestic animals that is threatened with extinction.
