The Grorother Hof is located at 145  m above sea level at the southeastern, lower end of the Wiesbaden district of Frauenstein in Hesse , Germany . Above the courtyard is the Spitzer Stein elevation with the Goethestein and the Nuremberg courtyard . The "Europe Vineyard" is located on the southern slope. Immediately below the farm, Lippbach and Erlenbach flow together and form the Grorother Bach, which is called Lindenbach below the Grorother Mühle and flows into the Rhine .

Buildings and facilities

The extensive complex is surrounded by a wall in its entire extent. Small round towers with loopholes , which were intended for powder guns, are in front of the corners . The manor house in the middle probably dates from the 16th century. At the end of the 17th century a two-story house with baroque portals was built on the road through the Grorother Valley. There is a small fountain in the middle between the buildings.

A wine press from 1808 stands in front of the courtyard .

history

Location of the fortifications around Frauenstein, 1819

Around the year 1300, the over-indebted Knights of Frauenstein sold Frauenstein Castle and parts of the village to the Mainz ore monastery . As a result, the House of Nassau threatened to lose its influence over the area. In order to secure their neighboring lands, the Counts of Nassau built the fortifications Armada , Groroth, Nuremberg , Rosenköppel and Sommerberg around Frauenstein in the following centuries .

Grorod coat of arms

The farm was first mentioned as Grawenrode in 1327, later in the 14th century also as Graenrode. It served as a residence for the noble family of Grorod, which was mentioned in a document from 1329 and died out in the 17th century. During the Thirty Years' War the farm was pledged. In 1694 the court became the property of the noble family Sohlern . Baron Anton (II.) Von Sohlern zu Graroth (* 1665; † July 12, 1729, Imperial Rittmeister) and his wife Maria Angela von Crazenbach lived here.

In 1699, the owners built the Grorother mill about 1 km southeast , which today belongs to Schierstein . In 1811 the farm came under Nassau administration and in 1914 it was owned by the von der Leyen family .

The Grorother Hof is owned by the Ott winery, which runs the Zum Kapellchen restaurant . The farm is the seat of the Frauenstein wine cooperative founded in 1898.
