history

Bierstadt in 1898 with a view of the church, the old school and the war memorial, painting by F. Henrich

The oldest traces of settlement in the Bierstadt area date from the Stone Age . Bierstadt was first mentioned as "Birgidestad" in a deed of donation dated March 12, 927. The place was founded by Irish monks who named it after the Irish national saint Brigida von Kildare . From the 11th / 12th Century comes the Protestant church that not only the oldest church in Wiesbaden, but after from the Roman period dating Heidenmauer the second oldest monument in the Wiesbaden city's downtown is at all. Bierstadt subsequently belonged to Nassau , but was also subject to strong influences from the Electorate of Mainz . In the course of the Reformation , Bierstadt came completely under Nassau rule.

After the end of the Thirty Years' War , the place had only 17 citizens. Reconstruction efforts were thrown back by a fire in 1691; In the middle of the 18th century there were around 500 inhabitants again. With the rise of Nassau to a duchy and the secularization of the monastic estates at the beginning of the 19th century, a period of calm returned. When Nassau became part of Prussia in 1866 , the proximity of Wiesbaden became more and more noticeable and led to a decline in agriculture in favor of industry and spa facilities.

In 1905 Bierstadt already had 3870 inhabitants. At the beginning of the 20th century, contacts with neighboring Wiesbaden became ever closer: Bierstadt's water, electricity and gas supply came from Wiesbaden, and from 1910 there was a tram connection. From 1898 it was planned to build a large observation tower on the Bierstadter Höhe. However, only a wooden temporary structure was built in 1910 , which was demolished in 1918. On April 1st, 1928 Bierstadt was finally incorporated into Wiesbaden.

In the Third Reich , Bierstadt was also dominated by National Socialism . On November 9, 1938, the Bierstadt synagogue , dating from 1827, was destroyed. During the Second World War , Bierstadt was hit by some bomb attacks and large parts of it were destroyed or damaged. After the war, a large number of refugees and expellees found their new home in Bierstadt, so that the district grew to 7,000 inhabitants. In addition, around 1,800 apartments for the American occupation troops were built in the Bierstadt district. In 1970 Bierstadt had grown to a population of 12,000.

Attractions

Protestant church

Protestant church

The former Catholic church, consecrated to St. Nicholas of Myra , today's Protestant parish church, is not only the oldest church in Wiesbaden, but also the city's second oldest monument after the heath wall . The church, which was built “in the second half of the 11th century”, was rebuilt in the years 1731–34. The original door lintel in the south wall, on which there are incised drawings from the Romanesque era, is particularly significant. The tower dates from the 12th century. Inside the church there are wall paintings from the 14th century and a winged altar from around 1501. During restoration and security work in 2007, paint residues were found on the south facade below the rain-protected roof overhang of the church. They suggest that the church was once composed in a similar way to the St. Clemens Church in Schwarzrheindorf .

Bierstadter Warte

The Bierstadter Warte watchtower, dating from 1473, stands on the level between the city center and the district. Stylized graphically, the tower adorns the Bierstadt coat of arms as a landmark. The Bismarck Tower was also located there until 1918 .

Aukammtal

The Aukammtal with its thermal baths , which was laid out in the 1970s, lies in the direction of the Rambachtal and Kurpark . A meadow-like landscape has emerged in the eastern part. Behind it is the apothecary garden.

The local administration is also responsible for the suburbs of Erbenheim, Igstadt, Kloppenheim and Hessloch; Bierstadt also has a large number of different shops and restaurants. There is no industry in Bierstadt, just a small commercial area . The first companies have been settling in a new industrial park on the eastern edge of the town since 2006. There are also several tree nurseries and large nurseries on the eastern edge of the village, some of which were already in operation during the imperial era. On Friday afternoons there is a small weekly market on the square in front of the Protestant church.
