Schierstein is a district of the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden .
Geographical location
Schierstein is located about five kilometers southwest of downtown Wiesbaden on the Rhine , below Rhine kilometer 505. Between Reichsapfelstrasse and the bank, Schierstein has a town center with narrow streets and many small houses down to Hafenstrasse . This serves as a promenade at the Schiersteiner Hafen , whose basin is animated by many jetties and corresponding boat traffic. Because of its Mediterranean flair, the traffic-calmed harbor promenade lined with plane trees is called the "Schiersteiner Riviera". The Lindenbach flows into the harbor here. The Dyckerhoff Bridge spans the port entrance. The Wiesbaden cement manufacturer Dyckerhoff donated this pedestrian bridge in 1967 to mark its centenary. In the middle of the village is the Christophorus Church in the Rococo style .
Businesses have settled around the town center. To the west was the Söhnlein Rheingold Sektkellerei , whose administration building is now used as the Rheingau Palais for SGL Carbon offices . The Glyco Metall-Werke , now a subsidiary of Federal-Mogul, have expanded to the north of the railway line . The office building of Schufa Holding AG is located at the Osthafen . Many small and medium-sized companies have settled in the east between the railway line and the banks of the Rhine on the Alte Schmelze , Schoßbergstraße , Rheingaustraße and Äppelallee . This industrial park continues east of the motorway in the neighboring district of Biebrich .
In the north of Schierstein is the Freudenberg settlement , which belongs to the Dotzheim district. To the north-west lies Frauenstein , in between on the Schiersteiner area the Grorother mill . To the west, Schierstein borders the wine village of Walluf , in between there is the nature reserve Niederwallufer Bucht and the extensive water protection area of the Schierstein waterworks , the area of which is used by white storks for breeding. To the south of the port there are Bauernaue and Bismarksaue , which form the port entrance with the Dyckerhoff Bridge . The Rettbergsaue as one of the Rheinaue meadows is also partly located in the Schierstein area and serves as a local recreation area .

Finds of the Neolithic ceramic band culture and the Rössen culture are known from the district of Schierstein . In the area of the center of Schierstein was in the time of the Michelsberg culture in the 5th / 4th. A millennium before Chr. An earthwork , of which in 1913 an approx. 120 m long section in the area of the Dr. Peters was documented. There are also settlement finds from later periods of the Hallstatt and Latène periods . In Roman times there were several manors of the Villa Rustica type in the area . A giant Jupiter column comes from one of these Roman manors, a copy of which can still be seen today in the Wilhelm Loos facility on the harbor promenade. The column was consecrated on February 28, 221 AD by Viccius Seneca, a rider of Legio XXII Primigenia . North of the train station was from 5th to 7th A burial ground from the Merovingian era , which has been known since 1828. Finds from the burial ground can be seen in the Schierstein Local History Museum but also in the Museum of Prehistory and Early History (Berlin) .
Schierstein was mentioned in a document as early as 860. The name of the village developed from Skerdestein around 973 via Skerdisstein to Scerstein in 1017 - which is similar to the dialect Scheerstaa . Schierstein means stone of Sherto - whereby stone here means castle. Since Schierstein belonged to the crown land of the Franconian kings, it has an orb in its coat of arms.
In 1926 it was incorporated into Wiesbaden. Schierstein has around 10,000 inhabitants today. Because of its immediate location on the Rhine , Schierstein is called the “gate to the Rheingau ” just like the neighboring town of Walluf .

Population development
In 1834 Schierstein still had more than 1,192 inhabitants, the number grew steadily over the course of the 19th century at the same time as Wiesbaden became a world spa town and in 1895 it had already reached 2976 inhabitants. In the next 10 years there was another increase of almost 50% to 4431 inhabitants in 1905. In 1925, shortly before the incorporation to Wiesbaden, 4896 people lived in Schierstein. On January 1, 2018, 10,539 people lived in the district

The first church and parish parish can be traced in Schierstein around 860 ; the church was located next to the Zehnthof on what was then the western edge of the village. After it partially collapsed in 1732, it was finally demolished in 1752 and the Christophoruskirche was built elsewhere , which was consecrated in 1754. In addition to the Rococo church, the associated Evangelical Christophorus Congregation has a community center with a kindergarten at the port. In Schierstein-Nord there is another evangelical community with the community center with day care center for the Resurrection community. The Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul is located north of the town center. Since the beginning of 2013 it has been the seat of the new parish of St. Peter and Paul with nine parishes. In addition, since August 2015 the Advent community of Wiesbaden has been located on the outskirts of the town center , which acquired the church building of the New Apostolic parish and completely renovated it. The divine services of the New Apostolic Church Community took place until the end of 2012. From the 18th century there was a Jewish community in Schierstein, the last members of which were deported in 1942 . A memorial site still commemorates Schierstein's Jewish past, on which a rose window of the Schierstein synagogue , which was inaugurated in 1858 , burned down in the November pogroms in 1938 and demolished in the 1960s, is on display. A Jewish cemetery was laid out in 1890 between Schierstein and the neighboring town of Walluf to the west, and was occupied until 1922/23. The new Jewish cemetery, laid out in the early 1920s, is located on the site of the municipal cemetery on the western edge of the town, which has existed since 1898. The Stolpersteine in Schierstein report on the fate of Jewish citizens during the National Socialist era.
On the western outskirts between the A66 motorway and the railway line on the right bank of the Rhine, the Moroccan cultural association “Masjid Badr” built a Muslim community center.

Culture and sights
music
The Schiersteiner Kantorei, a concert choir founded in 1962, is based in the Christophorus Church. Choirs are also located in the Resurrection Congregation and in St. Peter and Paul. The Eintracht men's choir, founded in 1877, was expanded to a mixed choir in 2005.
Sports
The harbor basin , which is mostly used as a marina today , is also a 1250 m long regatta course , which is mainly used by water sports enthusiasts who are organized in several local water sports, canoeing and rowing clubs . In addition, Schierstein has developed into one of the German centers of dragon boat sport, the WVS Rheingauner training in the harbor basin became world champions in 2007. From August 2007 to August 2010 the start of Ironman 70.3 Germany , which has meanwhile developed into the largest semi-Ironman in the world, took place in the Schiersteiner Hafen. There is also the gymnastics community Schierstein 1848 with offers such as handball, athletics, tennis and gymnastics, and several football clubs are also based there: 1. FSV Schierstein 08, SV Schierstein 1913, SG Schierstein 1979 and FSV Hellas Schierstein 1968. Regular events
In 1720 a fair was awarded to Schierstein. Every year in July, the “Schiersteiner Hafenfest” with its dragon boat race takes place at the harbor , to which more than 200,000 visitors came in 2009. In addition, the "Schiersteiner Jugendtag" has been held every two years since 2003 and is coordinated for young people by the local advisory council's youth group . Performances and hands-on activities by local clubs, groups and companies as well as local bands are offered. Only in 2011 was the event canceled due to the Hessian local elections on March 27, 2011. In addition, every two years from 2006 to 2016 there was the “Schiersteiner Kulturtage”, which was organized by the Schierstein Adult Education Center in cooperation with associations and parishes.

North of the center of Schierstein, the federal motorway 66 runs parallel to the Rhine . In the west of Schierstein it turns into federal highway 42 and leads into the Rheingau towards Rüdesheim . To the northeast of Schierstein is the Schiersteiner Kreuz , where the A 66 intersects with the A 643 , which crosses the Rhine to the south with the Schierstein Bridge and leads to Mainz .
Wiesbaden-Schierstein train station
In terms of rail technology, Schierstein is connected to the Wiesbaden-Schierstein ⊙ stop on the right-hand Rhine route , which connects Wiesbaden Central Station with Niederlahnstein . The station was initially called "Schierstein" and from March 1, 1927 "Wiesbaden-Schierstein". Two of the former train station with five tracks were used for passenger traffic, the second being reached via a level crossing going off from the house platform . The entrance building on the eaves with two gabled side elevations originally comprised a waiting room with a ticket office and living rooms on the upper floor. A push button interlocking from Siemens was also located here . A goods shed was available next to the reception building for general cargo traffic . To the east of the train station, industrial tracks branched off to the Alte Schmelze, to the industrial area on Hagenauer Strasse and to the Raiffeisen factory and the bone mill at Schiersteiner Hafen .
After several dismantling measures, most recently in October 2014, only two tracks are left on the outer platforms. The double block with a simple track change , which was used to secure the nearby level crossing on Freudenbergstrasse, was shut down because, among other things, the conversion to an automatic level crossing security system with a hazard area clearing system was implemented. The reconstruction of the railroad crossing to a grade- crossing is already called for longer because of the sometimes long waits of Schiersteiner politicians. The former station building was sold in 2014, the ground floor with the former waiting room is now used by a painting company.
Local transport
Schierstein is integrated into the tariff system of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund . The VIAS regional trains line 9 and 10 run at the station . Line 10 ("RheingauLinie") runs via Rüdesheim to Koblenz and via Wiesbaden main station to Frankfurt am Main , while line 9 ("RheingauExpress") runs on the same route from Eltville to Frankfurt am Main, leaving out Wiesbaden main station. Line 9 of the Wiesbaden trams , which went to Mainz main station, ended in Schierstein by April 1955 . Today it is connected to Wiesbaden city center as well as to Biebrich and Dotzheim via several bus routes operated by ESWE Verkehrsgesellschaft and Omnibusverkehr Rhein-Nahe (ORN) . In the opposite direction, the Rheingau and Taunus are the destinations of the ORN buses. ESWE line 5 also runs once an hour via Schierstein to Rauenthal and back. Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft and ESWE operate the joint lines 9 to Mainz-Hechtsheim and 45 via Mainz-Mombach to Mainz main station . A connection to Schierstein was discussed in the planning for the Wiesbaden tram .
With the new construction of the Schiersteiner Bridge and the closure of the Mombacher exit, line 45 will only operate from Raiffeisenplatz to the Friedrich-Bergius-Straße stop until the new opening.
Bicycle traffic
Schierstein does not have a designated cycle path network , but connections to neighboring towns are signposted. It is located on the Hessian long-distance cycle route R3 between Niederwalluf and Biebrich. In addition, a second, asphalted cycle path / sidewalk was built along Söhnleinstraße in 2016/17 between Walluf and Schierstein. About the bicycle lane on the schierstein bridge may Mainz in the district of Mombach and there the Rheinradweg ( D-Route 8) and the Rhineland-Palatinate cycle route be achieved.

In Schierstein there are two elementary schools , the Joseph-von-Eichendorff School in Schierstein-Nord, which was inaugurated in 1963 as the elementary school on Freudenberg , and the port school in the town center . The Erich Kastner -School is a major - and junior high school , which was inaugurated on 14 October 1970th The Volkshochschule Schierstein sees itself as a local adult education center and offers courses for the population.
military
French and British troops were stationed in Schierstein for the first time in the 1920s. The headquarters of the Reich Labor Service was later set up there, and during World War II the barracks at the harbor served as a medical supply depot. After the Second World War , the command and "Unit Sugar" of the Rhine River Patrol , a unit of the United States Naval Forces Germany , was set up in Schierstein. In 1956 the barracks were handed over to the river pioneer company 851 of the Bundeswehr . By 1987 a total of 280 men were stationed in Schierstein. Today, located at the former site of the barracks houses and the Jan-Niemöller House, a retirement home of EVIM .
