Niederwalluf is part of the municipality of Walluf in the Rheingau-Taunus district in Hesse .

Geographical location

The center of Niederwalluf lies west of the Walluf on the banks of the Rhine , but has expanded far to the east. The main part of the Niederwallufer district with the vineyards and the community forest extends east of the brook to the vicinity of Wiesbaden-Frauenstein . To the west of the Walluf there is only a small corner of less than 20 hectares, which is mainly occupied by the town center. To the east of Walluf lies Wiesbaden-Schierstein with the Schiersteiner Hafen , between the Niederwallufer Bay nature reserve and the Schierstein waterworks .

history

With the oldest surviving documentary mention as Waltaffa from the year 770, it cannot be clarified whether Niederwalluf or Oberwalluf is meant. From Nidenwaldoff is mentioned since the 1304th Originally, the place was located east of the Walluf around the current ruins of the Johanniskirche and the tower castle , but seems to have been relocated to the western side in the 12th century, like Martinsthal , under the protection of the Rheingau Gebück . Niederwalluf was thus part of the Electoral Mainz Rheingau . after dissolution of the Electoral state the place in 1803 went to Nassau-Usingen and belonged to the time of the Duchy of Nassau for Office Eltville , then to Rheingaukreis .

On October 1, 1971, the municipalities of Oberwalluf and Niederwalluf voluntarily merged to form the new municipality of Walluf.

traffic

Above the village, the federal road 42 , developed as a four-lane bypass road, runs through the district with a junction for the federal road 260 . At this junction there is an access from the federal trunk road network to Niederwalluf. The access road crosses under the right-hand Rhine route in a south-easterly direction and joins the K 648 district road on the eastern edge of the village, which runs through the town center from Wiesbaden-Schierstein in the east to Eltville am Rhein in the west. In the heart of the Walluftal there is the Mühlstraße as a connecting road to Oberwalluf. A bicycle and passenger ferry crosses the Rhine to Budenheim . On the banks of the Rhine, a towpath that is popular with walkers and cyclists leads to Eltville, to the east an equally popular path along the Niederwallufer Bucht nature reserve over the protective dike of the Schierstein waterworks with its stork colony to Schiersteiner Hafen .

The Niederwalluf station is a stopping point for the regional train traffic on the East Rhine Railway between Wiesbaden Hauptbahnhof and Koblenz main station . Until the end of 1930 the station was called Nieder Walluf .

Cultural monuments

tourism

Niederwalluf is the starting point of the Rheingau Gebück hiking trail set up in 2000 by the Rhein-Taunus Nature Park Association . The hiking trail that roughly follows the course of the Rheingau bridge leads past the few remaining evidence of the bridge and explains historical details at a total of 21 stations.
