The Wallufer Turmburg is the remainder of a Niederungsburg next to the Johanniskirche on the outskirts (towards Wiesbaden ) of the Niederwalluf district of the Walluf municipality in the Rheingau-Taunus district in Hesse .

History and layout

A “villa waltaffa” at the castle site was mentioned as early as 770, which was probably the beginning of the later tower castle , which was built in the 10th century to protect a Rhine crossing (sand bank) against the advancing Normans . In the second half of the 11th century, a residential building was built in the possession of the Kornelimünster monastery . The castle was destroyed around 1200 and ownership went to knight Heinrich gen. Frank von Wiesbaden in 1263.

From 1931 to 1933 the remains of the castle were uncovered. The castle complex shows the remainder of the tower made of cast masonry on a base area of 9.60 by 11.60 meters and a wall thickness of 2.20 to 2.30 meters and remains of moats that surround the tower. The castle had a kennel , a Romanesque house and an ossuary .
