The Scharfenstein Castle is the ruin of a Spur castle near the municipality Kiedrich in the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis in Hesse . It is located on the road from Kiedrich to Hausen in front of the height at 230  m above sea level. NN high mountain spur .

On the area around the former keep that a wide view over the vineyards of the Rheingau offers occasional castle festivals.

history

In 1160 the castle was built as a state castle under Archbishop Christian I von Buch and from 1191 was occupied by castle men, who then called themselves "von Scharfenstein". The most well-known of these descendants are the Kratz von Scharfenstein . The castle was the archbishop's residence several times in the 13th century . The Kiedricher have had the castle tower in their coat of arms since the 14th century .

From 1686 the castle became uninhabitable and in 1962 the remaining castle buildings were removed. The keep was renovated in 2008 and 2009 at a cost of around 380,000 euros.

investment

The 28 meter high keep with a diameter of 9 m at the base of the former castle complex is still very well preserved today. The castle dungeon is located in the lower part . The high entrance is at a height of 7.60 m and was originally accessible via a drawbridge or ladder. Today it is accessible via a modern metal external staircase. Inside the 3 m thick wall, stone stairs lead over three floors to the former weir plate , which serves as a viewing platform .
