Waldeck Castle

The Waldeck Castle is the ruins of a hilltop castle in Lorch in Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis in Hesse . It is located in the Rheingau above the Tiefenbach in a northern side valley of the Wisper .

Waldeck Castle has been part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002 .

location

Waldeck Castle at 230  m above sea level. NN was a Mainz border fortress to secure the Rheingau Gebück , opposite the Sauerburg and Sauerthal .

history

There is no evidence that the castle was founded in the 12th century; a Wolfricus de Waldeckken is first mentioned in a document in 1147. Presumably it is a nobleman or ministerial who calls himself Waldeck after the castle. On June 24, 1315, the castle became the Mainz Offenhaus . Since the 13th century at the latest, various families have lived in the castle, and they can be distinguished by their surnames (Ganerbeburg). Proof are u. a. the Marshals von Waldeck, the Waldbott von Waldeck and the Stumpf von Waldeck. Coexistence was precisely regulated in a truce agreement. Due to the legal form of the Ganerbeburg , the shape of the castle was created in a special way. Each co-owner built his own castle house in which he lived with his family (compare Eltz Castle). In the 18th century the castle was given as a fief , but it fell into disrepair in the 17th to 18th centuries, after which it was demolished.

Todays situation

Today only the remains of the wall and the 17-meter-deep castle fountain remain from the castle . The ruin is privately owned and was difficult to access for a long time. In the meantime, the once dangerous ascent from the Rheinhöhenweg to the Burgberg is secured by steps, so that the remains of the facility can be viewed at your own risk.
