The Dreibornskopf ring wall is a disused ring wall system in the Taunus in the Kiedrich district near the Schlangenbad district of Hausen vor der Höhe in the Rheingau-Taunus district of Hesse . A dating of the complex is not possible to this day due to the unclear local representation, as well as the lack of finds.

Geographical location

The ring wall is located in the Taunus part of the Rheingau Mountains within the Rhine-Taunus Nature Park in the Kiedricher community forest - about 1.7 kilometers southeast of Hausen and 4 km north-northwest of Kiedrich. It is located on the south-west protruding nose of the Dreibornsköpf at about 490  m above sea level. NHN Höhe and is not far from the top of the pass of the old road that leads from the upper Rheingau over the Taunushauptkamm to the Wispertal .

Exploration and description

Between 1904 and 1908 Christian Ludwig Thomas conducted explorations. However, there were no finds or wall cuts, which is why it is not possible to date the ring wall system to this day.

It is a small double ring wall. Only the oval inner ring with a length of 56 m and a width of 35 m can still be seen. A gate was found on the north-west side of the investigation under Christian Ludwig Thomas . The outer wall approaches a circular shape. The exact course can no longer be determined due to the destruction. For the same reason, there were no indications of a gate system. Obviously rock cliffs were partially included in the outer wall. To the northeast, a gently rising ridge leads to the Dreibornsköpf, which suggests that the access to the complex was made from there; the other mountain slopes below the ramparts drop moderately to steeply to the Sillgraben .

Monument protection

The castle stable of the ramparts is a ground monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, and accidental finds are reported to the monument authorities.

Say of the spirit wine

A local legend tells of the fact that invisible cellars are supposed to extend below the complex, in which the spirits of Roman legionaries are supposed to live. After the Varus Battle , the Cheruscan Hermann is said to have chased the Romans to the Wisper and wiped them out here.

According to legend, the spirits of these legionnaires climb out of the cellar into the vineyards in full gear in November, stubble the last remaining grapes and press wine from them. If a person gets lost in the heather cellar during this time, he is made drunk by the ghosts, wanders around the night and forgets the time.
