The Rheingau Mountains are the westernmost section of the Hohe Taunus and extend for a length of 20 kilometers in a south-west-north-east direction between the Rhine Valley near Lorch and Assmannshausen in the west and the Walluftal near Schlangenbad in the east. The highest point is the 619 meter high Kalte Herberge . The Rheinhöhenweg on the right bank of the Rhine runs along the ridge line of the mountains that belongs to the Taunus main ridge .

Geographical location and surroundings

The Rheingau Mountains are part of the Rheingau and are located in the Rheingau-Taunus district . The center of the Rheingau mountains forms the ridge line from the Kalten Herberge to the 580 meter high Erbacher Kopf . There is no point in four kilometers that is lower than 560 meters. About one kilometer southeast of the Kalten Herberge, and thus in front of the ridge line, the Hallgarter Zange also reaches a height of 580 meters. Here is a widely visible observation tower , which has been accessible again since a ropes course opened in 2015. Due to its south-facing location, the Hallgarter Zange appears from the Rhine as the highest elevation and partially covers the cold hostel .

To the south, the Rheingau Mountains drop steeply to the vineyards of the Rheingau . To the north, the wooded left side valleys of the Wispertal join, such as the Äpfelbachtal and the Ernstbachtal with the unpopulated area of the hinterland forest .

The Rheingau Gebück , the historic Rheingau Landwehr , ran north of the ridge of the summit .
