Geographical location
The cold hostel is located in the Rhine-Taunus nature park . While its largest part is in the Hallgarten district of the city of Oestrich-Winkel , its northeastern parts are part of the municipality of Eltville am Rhein ; Rüdesheim am Rhein is about 10 km to the southwest . Nearby towns are Hallgarten in the south-south-east, Kiedrich in the east-south-east and Stephanshausen in the west- south- west.
The gentle summit of the Kalten Herberge , which, like the Taunushauptkamm, has a northeast-southwest orientation, drops to the southwest to the Gray Stone (approx. 529 m ) and to the northeast to the Erbacher Kopf ( 579.8 m ). About 1 km southeast of the summit is the secondary summit Hallgarter Zange ( 580.5 m ). To the south the landscape slopes down to the vineyards of the Rheingau and the Oestrich-Winkeler district Hallgarten, to the north into the largely wooded Äpfelbach and Ernstbach valley in the hardly populated area of the hinterland forest. The Bubenhäuser Höhe is about 7.5 km east-southeast .
The cold hostel is entirely made up of dense coniferous forest , partly also deciduous forest. An information sign with the inscription: Kalte Herberge - 619 m above sea level indicates its hardly noticeable summit . NN - highest mountain in the Rheingau .

The Kalte Herberge belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Taunus (No. 30) and in the main unit Hoher Taunus (301) to the natural area Rheingauebirge (301.1). Parts of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area Wispertaunus (FFH-Nr. 5913-308; 52.59 km² ) lie on its northwest flank .
history
The historically significant border between Rheingau and Untertaunus runs north of the summit ridge. This is how the Rheingau Gebück ran for centuries since the Middle Ages . Relics of this formed by trees and hedges natural protective wall, which the 983 since the Archdiocese of Mainz belonging Rheingau should protect against enemy attacks from the Taunus, can still be found, such as on the Mapper Schanze . Only after 1803 were Rheingau and Untertaunus under the same sovereign rulers, namely the Duchy of Nassau until 1866 , then the Prussians , until the entire area became Hessian from 1946.
Heinrich Orlopp memorial stone
There is a memorial stone for the Hallgarten forester Heinrich Orlopp (born April 21, 1869) near the Kalten Herberge . He was shot dead by a poacher elsewhere on September 3, 1916. His friends and colleagues erected the memorial at the Cold Hostel to mark the tenth anniversary of Orlopp's death.
Traffic and walking
The summit of the Kalten Herberge is located in a dense forest, offers neither a view nor seating and is therefore not an attraction beyond its topographical significance. It is located away from main roads and can only be reached via small forest paths.
The district road 634, which branches off on the Rhine near Oestrich-Winkel near Reichartshausen Castle from the state road 3320 running to Hattenheim with a direct connection to the federal road 42 , leads up to Hallgarten and then as a vineyard road to the settlement Am Rebhang to the north of this village . From there a forest road runs up to the Kreistanne hiking car park ( ⊙ ) at an altitude of about 565 m . From there it's about 600 meters on a barely paved forest path to the northwest to the summit.
The section of the Rheinhöhenweg on the right bank of the Rhine runs between Kalter Herberge and Hallgarter Zange, where it shares a section with the European long-distance hiking trail E3 .
