Hinterland forest
In the Rheingau, the forests are referred to as hinterland forests, which, in contrast to the Vorderwald, lay outside the Rheingau Gebücks and, according to the Rheingau Weistum of 1324, were subject to the general grove court of the Rheingau. In contrast to the Vorderwald, the hinterland forest was not divided among the Rheingau communities, but the right of use was only available to them jointly. The forests essentially extended in the Ernstbachtal and its side valleys up to the Wisper .
Due to the remoteness of the hinterland forest and the impassable terrain, it was mainly used for charcoal burning and forest pasture . After signs of overexploitation were already evident before the Thirty Years War , two district foresters were appointed for the hinterland forest in the 18th century, based in the forester's house Weißenturm near Presberg and later in the Erbacher forester's house near Niedergladbach . Neither these two foresters, who lacked specialist knowledge and training, nor a new shark court order from Elector Emmerich Joseph von Breidbach zu Bürresheim from 1772 could remedy this evil. Only after the Rheingau passed to the Duchy of Nassau did a turning point take place. The shark court constitution was repealed in 1808 and the division of the hinterland forest into the Rheingau communities was initiated and concluded in 1822 with a settlement to which each community agreed. The rebuilding of the forest began under the Duchy of Nassau, which was continued under Prussian administration from 1866 and led to high-yield and well-tended stands in the 20th century.
With the aim of more intensive forest management, the Hinterlandswald association was founded in 1939 . The 13 km long hinterland forest road was built by the Reich Labor Service to better develop the remote forest areas . It leads from Hausen vor der Höhe on the ridge between Ernstbachtal and Gladbachtal to the north and is paved with asphalt to the end of the ridge line . Then it climbs curvy on the steep slopes of the Wispertal down to the Laukenmühle . Apart from the hinterland forest road, there are no paved roads in the entire hinterland forest. Thus, this forest area is one of the largest ecological retreats for wildlife in Hesse that has not been cut by such paths. Most of the hinterland forest belongs to the FFH area proposal Wispertaunus .
The remoteness of the hinterland forest with its mixed deciduous forest has meant that the rare black stork has settled and can breed undisturbed. The large forest area with its streams and ponds offers ideal terrain for this shy bird.
