geography
course
The Ernstbach rises 500 m northeast of Hof Mappen in the Rheingau hinterland forest in the area of the city of Eltville am Rhein near the former Rheingau Gebück . A few meters below the source, it crosses the bridle line and on its way to the west flows through the area of the Mappen farm, which no longer belongs to the Rheingau. Then he enters the hinterland forest, which he no longer leaves until the mouth. Deviating from its general westward direction, it describes a wide arc to the north around the Ziemerskopf . It then takes in the Äpfelbach from the left as the most important tributary at the Wickersheller Bridge .

Ernstbach valley
The valley system of the Ernstbach occupies the central part of the hinterland forest . With the exception of the agricultural areas of the Mappen farm (approx. 50 hectares), the entire catchment area of the Ernstbach is forested and uninhabited. There are no paved roads here. The Ernstbachtal and the adjacent hinterland forest are therefore one of the largest ecological retreats for wildlife in Hesse that have not been cut by such paths. Since there are no real tourist destinations in the whole valley, and it is far from the surrounding tourist infrastructure, it is absolutely deserted , apart from those who work in forestry and hunting . This in turn is, very close to the Rhine-Main conurbation, a sight in itself.
The valley is accessed from the Wisperstraße between the Lauksburg and the Kammerburg via the Hermannssteg through a forest path that connects to the Hinterlandswaldstraße at Hof Mappen , which runs on the ridge line between the Ernstbachtal and the Gladbachtal and leads to Hausen vor der Höhe .
Although the rainfall in Ernstbachtal are rather small, averaging less than 800 mm per year, and the brook leads correspondingly little water here began in 1977 plans to build a drinking water - dam of care to ensure the Rhein-Main area. However, the plans were abandoned, not least because the forecasts for water consumption were revised downwards in the following years.
