The Mappen farm is a four-sided farm in the municipality of Schlangenbad in the Rheingau-Taunus district , located in a clear individual location in a clearing of the hinterland forest in the Obergladbach district , which has been used since 1998 as a stud for thoroughbred breeding and as a location for events with a guest house.

Geographical location

The Mappen farm is located 483 meters above sea level in the Rheingau Mountains on the northern roof of the Taunus main ridge, about 1,500 meters north of the Kalten Herberge and about two kilometers south of Obergladbach. The Mappen farm and its lands are almost completely enclosed by the Rheingau hinterland forest, but they themselves form an exclave that does not belong to the Rheingau and is only connected to the rest of the Obergladbach district via a narrow passage about 300 meters wide. The access to Hof Mappen is ensured by a branch from the Hinterlandswaldstraße , which runs northeast of the farm above Obergladbach on a ridge.

The historic Rheingau Gebück ran along the southeast border of the Mappen farm . The passage through this Landwehr for the route from Oestrich to Mappen was secured by the Mapper Schanze , the best preserved gate bulwark of the Rheingau Gebück.

At the location of the Mappen courtyard, a hermit named Appo is said to have lived in the loneliness of the forest and so gave the place its name. Then in 1173, after lengthy negotiations, the site of what would later become the court was acquired by the Cistercians of the Eberbach monastery to meet the need for wood. Then the construction of the farm began, on which after the clearing of the surrounding areas mainly cattle farming, but also arable farming was carried out.

The establishment of this courtyard directly on the outer border of the Rheingau Gebück posed a constant threat to the Landwehr. Not least because of this, the Rheingau built the Mapper Schanze in 1494 , the best-preserved gate bulwark of this medieval border fortification.

After the Thirty Years' War, Abbot Christoph sold the farm to Friedrich von Greiffenclau zu Vollrads in 1649 . The gentlemen of Greiffenclau lived at Vollrads Castle near Winkel (Rheingau) .

No structural remains have survived from the founding of the Eberbach Monastery and the old Greiffenclau'schen Hofgut. The residential building from 1749–53 was replaced by a new building around 1986. Barns and farm buildings were rebuilt in 1935 as half-timbered buildings. A stone with the date and the von Greiffenclau coat of arms was moved to the new building. The buildings surround a wide rectangular courtyard on four sides.

In 1938 Richard Graf Matuschka-Greiffenclau and his wife Eleonore had a small chapel built on the edge of the forest south of the Mapper Hof. An inscription placed there reads:

Eberbach Monastery cleared the Mapper Hof before 1200
Rheingau Generalhaingericht met here in 1226
Purchase by Friedrich von Greiffenclau
Residential building 1749-53
1938 built this chapel Richard and Eleonore Matuschka-Greiffenclau

After the Second World War, the farm passed into other hands several times and has been used as a stud since 1998.
