About this picture

Schlangenbad is a community and a spa on Bäderstraße Taunus in the Rheingau-Taunus district in Hesse and borders the state capital Wiesbaden to the west . The place is considered the oldest recognized Hessian spa. The name Schlangenbad can be traced back to the Aesculapian snakes found in the municipality as a result of the Mediterranean climate .

With 131 percent, the community of Schlangenbad has a purchasing power index that is well above the national average (100 percent), making after Niedernhausen the community with the highest per capita income in the Rheingau-Taunus district.

geography

Location and community structure

The district of Schlangenbad and thus the core of the community is located 320  m above sea level as a health resort . NN in a protected valley slope in the densely wooded Hohe Taunus at the confluence of the Warm Bach and the Walluf . Schlangenbad is 12 km from Wiesbaden , 7 km from Eltville am Rhein and 7 km from Bad Schwalbach .

The elongated community area extends over 13 km with the districts of Georgenborn in the east, lined up like a chain, via the core village of Schlangenbad, then on via Wambach and Bärstadt to the highest district and climatic health resort of Hausen vor der Höhe (483 meters), from there into into the Gladbachtal via Obergladbach and Niedergladbach to the Hinterlandswald and Wispertal in the west.

The highest point of the municipality is on the western slope of the Hohe Wurzel , near the Taunus Wunderland , at around 544 meters. The lowest point in the Walluftal near the Schlangenbad forester's house and the Neu-Mühle is 210 meters.

Neighboring communities

Schlangenbad borders the city of Bad Schwalbach in the north, the city of Taunusstein and the independent city of Wiesbaden in the east, the city of Eltville am Rhein and the municipality of Kiedrich in the south and the city of Oestrich-Winkel in the west .

Climate and snakes

In Schlangenbad there is a weak, gentle climate with strong nighttime cooling. The temperate climate is comparable to the Mediterranean climate. Because of this and because of the warming of the Walluf by thermal springs, even after the general cooling of the climate in Germany, a population of the Aesculapian snake could be preserved , which today only occurs in Mediterranean or special warmer areas of the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany (in 3 places), at warmer times but was common throughout Central Europe. The place name Schlangenbad is based on this occurrence of the Aesculapian snake, the coat of arms shows the snake with a crown.

Several times a year guided tours to the Aesculapian snake are offered by various institutions. The five underpasses of the Bäderstraße / bypass were equipped with so-called crossing aids as part of compensatory measures by the road construction administration in cooperation with the Darmstadt regional council and the Naturschutzhaus association.

history

Schlangenbad was created in 1694 as a bath above the mouth of the Warm Bach , and in 1818 it was elevated to the status of a community. Earlier names of the place are: Warme Mühlen (1482), Amtmannsbad (1687), Karlsbad (1693), Schlangenbad (1700) and Schlangen Bad (1708). Liselotte von der Pfalz mentioned "Schlangenbadt" several times, first in 1699 in a letter to her half-sister Amelise. The meeting of the Prime Ministers of the three western zones of occupation took place in Schlangenbad on June 15, 1949 , in which the electoral law for the first German Bundestag and the ordinance on election day (August 14, 1949) were passed.

Incorporations

The neighboring town of Georgenborn, which was incorporated into the city of Wiesbaden in 1928, changed its municipal affiliation on April 1, 1939 and was henceforth integrated as a district into the community of Schlangenbad in the Untertaunuskreis . In the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Wambach was incorporated into the municipality of Schlangenbad on a voluntary basis with effect from December 31, 1971. On July 1, 1972, the municipalities of Bärstadt, Hausen vor der Höhe, Niedergladbach and Obergladbach followed suit.

Historic café hall in Schlangenbad (near Wiesbaden)

The Schlangenbad thermal springs were discovered in the middle of the 17th century. After Francis Head published Bubbles from the Brunnen in 1830 , the Taunus baths became popular among the British. During the boom after the Nassau acquisitions and the publication of the "Bubbles", Schlangenbad and Schwalbach had no disadvantage in terms of location compared to Ems and Wiesbaden, until around 1845 traveling by stagecoach was made obsolete by the faster, more convenient and cheaper railroad. While a total of 1564 spa guests came in 1838, the number of English spa guests fell to around 600 by 1865. The number of French guests was high for a while after the French Empress Eugénie cured here several times. German aristocratic circles valued Schlangenbad, as you could take cures here relatively undisturbed. There has been an outdoor thermal pool since 1931; Statutory health insurance patients were first admitted to the cure in 1950. The historic café hall from the 19th century has been preserved as a characteristic architecture of German spas . Today a total of nine springs have been developed, which arise with temperatures between 21 and 32 degrees Celsius on the southern slope of the Bärstädter Kopf. It treats rheumatic and other inflammatory diseases.

Gambling: For the first time in 1709 a concession was granted to the Italian Pietro Varena on the Hessian side. The house he built was passed on to Martin Cetto from Mainz in 1721. Later in the 18th century numerous smaller venues were operated, which made the small town more interesting for spa guests. In the early 1830s, the sub-tenant for Schwalbach and Schlangenbad was Friedrich Kühnemann, a starch manufacturer and “court chimney sweep” from Kassel. The license (for all casinos in the Duchy of Nassau) was held from 1834 by Antoine Chabert, who was ousted from Baden-Baden . Since then, private expansion of the pool has been promoted. Chabert renounced his rights in 1845 so that the casino could be closed.
