At 255 meters, Rauenthal is the highest wine-growing town in the Rheingau in the Rheingau-Taunus district . The place was incorporated in 1977 as a local district in the sparkling wine and rose town of Eltville am Rhein . Rauenthal has around 1,800 inhabitants.
Geographical location
Rauenthal is the highest district of Eltville and is located in a saddle position on a ridge that descends from the Taunushauptkamm with the 495 meter high Hansenkopf to the south to the 268 meter high Bubenhäuser Höhe . To the east, the district drops off steeply to the Walluftal . It just includes the Tiefenthal Abbey and extends to the local area of Martinsthal . In the west, the district drops off steeply to the Sülzbachtal . The Rauenthal vineyards are concentrated on the slopes of the Bubenhäuser Höhe and include the Rauenthal domain of the Hessian state winery Kloster Eberbach , located in the southwest of the district .
history
The Archbishops of Mainz have been promoting viticulture in the Rheingau since the 8th century, starting from the monasteries of Eberbach and Johannisberg . Rauenthal was first mentioned in a document on March 23, 1274, when the then Archbishop of Mainz , Werner von Eppstein, confirmed to the Roman-German King Rudolf von Habsburg that he had brought the Rheingau village as Kurmainz territory into the possession of the archbishopric.
The most striking building in the village is the Catholic Church of St. Antonius (built 1468–1491). The Lutheran theologian and later court preacher in Wiesbaden Nikolaus Gompe (1524 / 25–1595) came from Rauenthal. The later Auxiliary Bishop of Mainz Christoph Nebel (1690–1769) was pastor here from 1714 to 1729.
In the 16th and 18th centuries, the "Rauenthal wine markets" were famous, and the harvest was taken over by North German and Dutch merchants and shipped with Rhine ships or horse-drawn carts. European royal houses valued Rauenthaler wine, and at the Paris World Exhibition in 1867 it was named "the best wine in the world".
After the dissolution of the Electoral state Rauenthal 1803 went to Nassau-Usingen and belonged to the time of the Duchy of Nassau for Office Eltville . After the annexation of the duchy by Prussia , the place was assigned to the Rheingau district in the Wiesbaden administrative region in 1867 .
As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Rauenthal (Rheingau) was incorporated into the city of Eltville on January 1, 1977 with other municipalities by virtue of state law . For Rauenthal, as for the core city and the other parts of the city, a local district with a local advisory council and local councilor was established. The boundaries of the local districts follow the previous district boundaries.

traffic
Due to its location on a ridge that can only be reached via long and arduous climbs, Rauenthal is away from all important traffic connections. The place is accessible to road traffic through the district road K 641, which branches off from the federal road 260 near Martinsthal and leads up curvy to the south-east entrance to the village, then crosses the place lengthways to the north and in the vicinity of the Klingermühle and the premises of the The Efen company again joins the B 260. Via the B 260, in turn, there is a fast connection via the federal motorway 66 to the large cities of the Rhine-Main area .
Rauenthal is the only district of Eltville that is touched by the Rheinsteig long-distance hiking trail , namely on the section " Schlangenbad to Eberbach Monastery ". Near the hiking trail is the "Bubenhauser Höhe", from which one has a distant view of the neighboring vineyards and the Rhine Valley. Rauenthal is also part of the "Rheingauer Riesling Route".
education
In Rauenthal there is the Otfried Preußler School as a primary school in the Rheingau-Taunus district. There are opportunities to visit secondary schools in the core town of Eltville.
