The Roman Catholic , former parish church of St. Antonius is a Gothic hall church in Rauenthal , a district of Eltville am Rhein in the Rheingau-Taunus district in Hesse . Today St. Antonius is a branch church of the parish of St. Peter and Paul Rheingau, a new type of parish. Since 2015 St. Peter and Paul in Eltville is also the parish church of Rauenthal. The parish belongs to the Rheingau district of the Limburg diocese .

History and architecture

The west tower of the parish church of St. Antonius Eremita probably comes from a chapel that was built between 1326/1327 and 1339, as evidenced by building indulgences . The nave and the choir are from the third quarter of the 15th century and are dated by building decay from 1459 and the keystone of the former south portal porch marked in 1464 . The wall pillar church is in the tradition of the school of Hans von Burghausen . The initially flat-roofed nave was vaulted on the western keystone by Wolfgang Tenk , who also worked in Kiedrich , with the year 1492. The tower spire and the roof were built after a fire in 1558. In 1953/1954 an extension was made on the north side of the choir instead of the late medieval St. Michael's Chapel. In the years 1986–1992 an overall restoration took place, during which an initially exposed cycle of wall and vault paintings with scenes from the life of St. Anthony the Eremita was painted over again.

The building consists of a wide, three-bay nave with a retracted choir consisting of a yoke with a five-eighth end and a west tower, which is crowned by a pointed helmet with an inserted lantern and four corner turrets. The windows of the choir and the nave are provided with fish-bubble tracery. The ship's buttresses are drawn inwards. The southern portal shows piercing bars and the municipal coat of arms. Star vaults on figural consoles can be found in the choir, similar to those in Breithardt , Niederlibbach , Strinz-Trinitatis and Walsdorf . The inwardly drawn buttresses are rounded towards the interior of the ship like columns and connected to one another by shield arches. The space is closed by star vaults with double-fluted ribs over consoles with coats of arms. On the south side of the choir is the reticulated former sacristy, in which the organ has been installed since the restoration from 1954–1956. The two lower tower floors close with cross vaults.

Furnishing

The high altar structure from 1691 was created by Balthasar Seydel in 1691, the sculptures by Christian Rosaller. The altar panel was created in 1920 and shows the Assumption of Mary as a handcrafted copy after Guido Reni , framed by statues of Saints Anthony and John the Baptist . At the cafeteria, two deer at the water source by Georgio Pickard are depicted in the painted antependium .

The side altars were also created by Seydel and Rosaller and are dedicated to Mary in the north altar from 1710 and to St. Anne in the south altar from around 1720 . The triumphal cross was created from wood by Rosaller in 1691. A finely crafted, forged late Gothic candlestick table from the first half of the 15th century shows four candle hoops with a total of 103 candlesticks on twisted feet and is comparable to that of St. Valentinus in Kiedrich .

On the north side of the choir is a finely crafted, standing Mother of God in wood from the master’s workshop with a bib from around 1500 (with additions to the right hand of the figure of Mary and the left arm of the child). It was restored in 1992.

In the choir there are seven small oil paintings from the pulpit removed in 1956 with depictions of Christ, the Evangelists , Antonius Eremitas and John the Baptist. A small wooden Pietà , donated in 1654, with a setting from 1971 is placed in the niche in the north wall of the nave, above it is a painting with the Lamentation of Christ from 1684.

Further to the west, the Virgin Mary is placed on the globe with a rich decoration from 1742. On the west gallery, which was reduced in depth in 1956, the recessed gallery front with parapet paintings can be seen, which shows fourteen saints from scenic backgrounds from around 1700. The font from around 1490, decorated with tracery on the basin, is placed in the tower hall. In the northern extension there are wooden figures from the 18th century of the Annunciation and five saints as well as the former sacristy bell in wrought iron ornamental mounts with tracery from the second half of the 15th century. On the outside of the building there is a larger than life wooden crucifix from 1726 and a stone figure of the Immaculata from 1763.

The organ is a work by the Oberlinger brothers from 1977 with 18 stops on two manuals and a pedal .

Bells

Two bells by Heinrich von Trier from 1560 are hung in the tower: the parish bell Maria and the bell of John the Baptist, probably from the former monastery of Tiefenthal . From previous bells an e¹ and a c² are known, both from the bell foundry Hamm in 1897 , as well as a confession bell from 1920 in the tower lantern.
