St. Peter and Paul (Eltville)
The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul is an asymmetrical two-aisled hall church in Eltville am Rhein .
history
The first traces of an early church building from the 10th century were discovered during construction work and excavations in 1933/34; a Romanesque building followed in the 12th century. Evidence of this is presumably given by a thin round column that supports the gallery in the main nave. In the 14th century - Eltville had become the archbishop's residence - the building no longer met the requirements, which is why it was decided to build a new one.
The keystones show that the Mainz Petersstift , which was the patronage of the Eltville Church, as well as the Mainz Cathedral Stift and nobles from Eltville donated money for the new building. An indulgence awarded in 1352 or 1353 also contributed to the financing .
The construction of today's church may have started in 1305, the choir could be used from 1359. The tower of the previously single-nave hall church initially served as the tower of the Romanesque previous building , similar to St. Martin in Oestrich or St. Vincentius in Hattenheim .
Around 1420 an extension of the church to the south begins with a new aisle. The reason was probably a host miracle that happened in Niedergladbach in 1400 . When the Host moved to Eltville, a pilgrimage began that made it necessary to enlarge the church.
Around the same time the western tower, which characterizes the landscape, was added. It was built by a student of the Frankfurt master builder Madern Gerthener and has rich late Gothic ornaments. The west portal shows the coat of arms of the Archbishop of Mainz Konrad von Dhaun . It is reminiscent of Madern Gerthener's work on the memory portal in Mainz Cathedral , the south portal of the Frankfurt cathedral tower and the west portal of the St. Valentinus Church (Kiedrich) .
After a lightning strike in 1683 the tower burned down, instead of a steep Gothic helmet, a new baroque tower dome was built in 1686 by master builder Veit Schneider from Mainz.
The current roof over the nave with a turret from 1783 was built after a fire in 1782.
From 1862 extensive renovation work took place in order to restore the church to a Gothic state. Among other things, the white glass panes that had replaced older church windows in 1753 were replaced by colored windows by the Belgian artist Jean-Baptiste Bethune . These six so-called "blue windows" were used as the end of the choir in 1867/68 and show Saints Peter and Paul, Catherine and Sebastian and Karl Borromeo and Elisabeth. 1902–05, new end windows by the artist AF Martin replaced the Bethune windows, which were moved to the north side of the choir.
The next major changes took place in 1933/34. A new sacristy was created and the old one converted into a Lady Chapel. The stump of the old Romanesque tower was also removed.
In 1984/85 the artist Jupp Jost created new windows on the subject of "Wine in the Old and New Testament" for the north wall of the church.
St. Peter and Paul is the parish church of the parish of St. Peter and Paul Rheingau, which was founded in 2016 as a new type of parish from the amalgamation of the pastoral rooms Oestrich-Winkel, Eltville and Wallufthal. Organs
The Eltville Church has two organs : On the initiative of Baron John Sutton , a swallow's nest organ was built by master organ builder Louis-Benoît Hooghuys (1822–1885) from Bruges , Belgium , based on the example of the organ in St. Valentinus (Kiedrich) in 1868/1869 . He had already carried out the restoration work on the Kiedrich organ. In 1934, the Klais company built a new, three-manual gaming table on the west gallery. The swallow's nest organ could now be played from there. In 1953 Klais changed the disposition profoundly.
The main organ from 1962 was rebuilt by the company Förster & Nicolaus from Lich using some older registers . The swallow's nest organ was reduced from eight to five registers and the prospectus was shut down. In 1979 a new gaming table was installed.

Bells
Until the church tower burned down in 1683, the church had four large bells, the largest of which is said to have weighed 5050 kg; after that, four large bells with a weight of 4000 kg, 2750 kg, 1750 kg and 1250 kg and a small measuring bell are detected. But in 1782 this bell also fell victim to a church tower fire. Thereupon Wilhelm Heinrich Rincker was commissioned to cast five new bells using the leftover pieces. In the 19th century it was damaged in various ways. Until World War II, the bell consisted of four bells and a volleyball in the roof turret. The four big bells were confiscated in 1942. But in 1948 two of them were found and brought back. In 1953, the Schilling bell foundry cast two new bells to complete the bells. Today it consists of four bells again.
- Bell disposition : h 0 - d 1 - f 1 - as 1
The old, still preserved, volley of bell from 1783 hangs inaudibly in the roof turret of the nave, it has the striking note c 2 .
