St. Martin (Oberwalluf)
The Roman Catholic , former parish church of St. Martin is a neo-Gothic church in Oberwalluf in the Rheingau. Today it is a branch church of the parish of St. Peter and Paul Rheingau, a new type of parish. Since 2015 St. Peter and Paul in Eltville has also been the parish church of Oberwalluf.
history
The nave was built in 1900-01. The older, late Gothic choir contains tracery windows and a reticulated vault .
In 1903 the artist and restorer Hans Steinlein (1872–1958) was entrusted with the complete furnishing of the church .
The Elisabethenaltar guards the penitential robe of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia . According to tradition, St. Francis of Assisi gave it to her as a gift after she entered his order. The tight fitting garment is made of dark, coarse wool. Around 1237 it first came to Tiefenthal Abbey , in 1803 it was handed over to the church of Oberwalluf. On the Sunday after Elizabeth's Day (November 17th) the shrine with the robe is opened and a relic ceremony is held.
