Werner Schäfke (born July 10, 1944 in Hildesheim ) is a German historian and art historian. From 1984 to 2009 he headed the Cologne City Museum .

Schäfke studied history, art history, geography and Catholic theology in Cologne, Bonn and Mainz. In 1976 he was on the faculty of history Sciences of the University of Mainz with the theme Early Christian resistance doctorate . From 1976 he worked as a curator at the Cologne City Museum until he took over its management in 1984. In 1979 he worked as a scientific advisor for the 13-part television series Die Menschen vom Domplatz . In 2009 he retired, but remained managing director of the Association of Friends and Patrons of Cologne Customs.

As director, Werner Schäfke was responsible for a number of exhibitions at various locations, including Der Name der Freiheit. 1288-1988. Aspects of Cologne history from Worringen to today in 1988, The Cologne Charterhouse around 1500. A journey into our past in 1991 and The New Cologne. 1945-1995 .

Schäfke is the author of numerous publications, including a number of exhibition and inventory catalogs for the city museum. In addition to works on the history of the city of Cologne and the Rhineland, he wrote several publications on Gothic architecture.
