introduction

The series takes place in Germany in the 13th century , in a typical city of the late Middle Ages . Riots break out one day after the bishop demands customs fees for the Rhine ferries. In the course of the fighting, the bishop is driven out of the city and the cathedral is destroyed. Now a new cathedral has to be built. This work takes decades. Again and again the residents are confronted with new difficulties, not least because of marauding robber barons the already hard life of the time is made more difficult for them. Political turmoil and the resulting power vacuum threaten to sink the country into chaos. The only way out seems to be to unite the cities into a federation.

content

The story is primarily about the carpenter Josef, his family and his friend Gumpert, the weaver . When an uproar shakes the city, a dispute breaks out between the two sons of Joseph. Norbert stands by the merchants who rebel against the rule of the nobility and the bishop , while Arndt fights on the side of the bishop's servants. Norbert is seriously injured in this fight, can only be saved with the help of the Jewish doctor Salomon and can no longer be used as a carpenter.

A new bishop is installed, the revolt has triumphed and now a new cathedral has to be built because the old one has been destroyed. For the local craftsmen, this means work for decades. Josef worries, however: Norbert changes to the merchant class, while Arndt wants to become a stonemason . None of his sons want to remain loyal to the carpenters' guild .

The situation changed noticeably over the years. Norbert becomes an able and successful businessman. However, dark clouds are gathering around the city: robber barons are terrorizing the countryside and threatening the cities and villages. Josef is killed in one of these insidious attacks. Norbert, who has now risen to the city council and mayor , is politically active. He and his group recognize that a strong alliance must be found that offers protection for all. This is the only way the city can survive and the construction of the cathedral, which was extremely important for the deeply religious people of the time, can be completed.

Others

In 1979 the series was shot with great effort. In addition to a large number of actors and extras, this also included scientific advice in order to portray everyday life in a medieval city as authentically as possible. A special technical feature was the bluebox process ( chroma key technology, to be precise ) using the Japanese Ikegami HL 77 camera , which, due to its compact design and low weight, was ideally suited to photographing true-to-scale at a person's eye level or even digging it into the model to become. The series was broadcast for the first time on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from January 22 to March 11, 1980 on ARD and repeated from January 12 to April 6, 1982.

DVD

In March 2012 the DVD box for the series was released with three DVDs in the “Big Stories” series.
