Reclam's art guide

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reclam's art guide is the name of a series of books published by Reclam Verlag in Stuttgart between 1958 and 1994 .

In contrast to the Handbook of German Art Monuments founded by Georg Dehio , which is still being continued today by the Deutscher Kunstverlag , Reclam's art guide was aimed at a "broader, art-interested audience." The series enjoyed great popularity at times, so that several volumes appeared in several (up to 9), repeatedly expanded and revised editions.

In contrast to the Handbook of German Art Monuments, the art guides of the Reclam Verlag also listed a number of contemporary buildings as well as the most important museums and collections with a selection of their exhibits . In addition, unlike the Dehio, the books contained a number of black and white illustrations. The handy format corresponded to the editions of Reclam's universal library , the volumes are also referred to as part of the universal library with number.

The first volume of Reclam's art guide was published in 1957 on the state of Bavaria . In the same year Baden-Württemberg followed with the Palatinate and Saarland , in 1959 the Rhineland and Westphalia and finally in 1960 as Volume 4 Lower Saxony with the Hanseatic cities of Bremen and Hamburg . This covered the western German federal states. Later the volumes were subdivided more and more. In 1967, for the first time, a separate volume was dedicated to the state of Hessen . The volume Lower Saxony, Hanseatic Cities, Schleswig-Holstein now appeared as volume no. 5 in the series. In 1979, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland left the Baden-Württemberg band and in 1980 were also given their own edition. In 1983, the volume of the state of Bavaria, which is particularly rich in architectural monuments, was divided.

In 1961, Reclam's art guide jumped the German borders for the first time with two volumes on Austria . In the period that followed, further volumes appeared on several neighboring European countries, for example for Italy (from 1962), France (from 1965), Switzerland and Liechtenstein (from 1966), Turkey (1976), Denmark (1978), Sweden , Finland (both 1985) and Spain (from 1986). The foreign volumes in particular enjoyed great esteem among experts, because "as a substitute for missing manuals of the Dehio type, Reclam's art guides had an irreplaceable function for non-German-speaking countries, which was also recognized by art historians in the countries concerned."

The East German regions were not processed. Only the volume on Berlin , published for the first time in 1977 , included the eastern part of the city and part of the territory of the GDR .

Towards the end of the 1970s, the appearance of the series changed significantly. The linen cover was replaced by a plastic cover and the dust jacket was set off in orange and blue. Later, the dust jacket was completely dispensed with and the volumes were provided with a plastic cover in orange and blue. At the beginning of the 1990s, they finally switched to bringing out some titles in a much larger format. The volumes Berlin (1991) and Florenz were published in this format . However, there was no longer a complete revision of the series. With the new edition of the Rome volume (1994), the art guide series was finally completely discontinued, presumably because the sales figures were far below expectations.
