Fried Mühlberg (born October 6, 1915 in Cologne ; † May 6, 2006 ) was a German historian and art historian who held the office of city curator in Cologne from 1969 to 1978 .

Life

Born in 1915 and raised as a pastor's son in Cologne-Mülheim , Fried Mühlberg studied German, history, geography, art history and archeology at the universities of Cologne, Freiburg im Breisgau, Munich and Bonn after graduating from high school at a humanistic grammar school. His studies were interrupted by labor and military service. In 1949 he received his doctorate in Cologne under Hans Kaufmann, which was followed by jobs at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne and at the state monuments offices in Bonn and Münster.

From 1954 he worked as curator for city curator Hanna Adenauer , from 1957 to 1969 as chief curator at the Roman-Germanic Museum . As the successor to Hanna Adenauer, he held the office of Cologne city curator from 1969 to 1980.

Mühlberg's successors, Hiltrud Kier and Ulrich Krings, describe his term of office as a phase in the re-evaluation of the historicist architecture of the 19th century, which until then had not been considered worth preserving. Mühlberg actively worked on the inventory and maintenance of these buildings, although he often had to struggle with resistance in his own administration. In particular, there was often a lack of support from the chief cultural officer, Kurt Hackenberg, and the necessary staff in the office.

"At a distance of about 15 years it is difficult to express how great the resistance to the preservation of monuments was in the administration (including the cultural department) and parts of the council at that time"

- Hiltrud Kier 1991

In 1978 Mühlberg was replaced by Hiltrud Kier in the office of city curator; In addition to other works, in 1989 he published Volume 17 of the book series Stadtspuren on the Romanesque Church of St. Pantaleon in Cologne, which was one of his main scientific interests.

Mühlberg died in 2006 at the age of 90.
