Life

The son of a tape manufacturer from Barmen studied German, history, theater and newspaper studies as well as art history at the Universities of Bonn and Cologne . At first he was head of the Wuppertal press and advertising office as well as the archive, and worked as a journalist for “ Die Welt ”, “ Rhein-Echo ” and “ Neue Rhein Zeitung ”, among others . In 1955 he was elected councilor for culture by the Cologne City Council. He held this office for 24 years until 1979. In 1959 he was involved in the founding of Germania Judaica . Hackenberg was a member of the SPD .

During his tenure he engaged Oscar Fritz Schuh ( drama ), Aurel von Milloss (ballet), later also Claus Helmut Drese as general manager at the Cologne theater, as well as the director Hansgünther Heyme . The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum received the Pop Art collection of Peter Ludwig and his wife Irene during this time . Together with Hugo Borger, who was appointed by him, he promoted the construction of the Roman-Germanic Museum . He had a new building built in the Severinsviertel for the historical archive of the city of Cologne . He promoted cultural education, for example by expanding the adult education center and building the city library with the Heinrich Böll Archive in 1979. He supported experimental culture, for example, by hiring gallery owners Hein Stünke and Rudolf Zwirner the Gürzenich to organize their worldwide first art market for contemporary art in 1967. He promoted exhibitions such as “Happening and Fluxus” in 1967 at the Kölnischer Kunstverein as well as the Heins' underground film activities with X-Screen. He initiated major exhibitions such as "The Parler and the Beautiful Style" in 1978, "Tutankhamun" (the originals) in 1980 and "Westkunst" in 1981.

Hackenberg's activities against the then director of the Cologne Gürzenich Concerts, the conductor Günter Wand , in the early 1970s, which led to his premature resignation in 1974, are to be viewed as rather critical .
