The coat of arms of Zabrze (German: Hindenburg OS ) was introduced in 1927 and symbolizes the name and industrial character of the city, which is made up of several municipalities.

history

Coat of arms from 1927

The industrial community of Hindenburg OS received city rights on October 1, 1922 , which necessitated a city coat of arms . In 1924, the city announced a competition in which 93 designs of coats of arms by 46 authors were submitted. The winning design came from Alfred Brockel from Gleiwitz . On May 17, 1927, the coat of arms was approved by the Ministry of the Interior of the Free State of Prussia and the city could henceforth bear this coat of arms.

Coat of arms from 1960

In 1945 Hindenburg OS fell to Poland, was renamed Zabrze and on February 19, 1948, the city council decided to remove the previous coat of arms. The use of the coat of arms was made subject to a fine and imprisonment. In the course of the Polonization, all symbols of the city's German past were erased. In October 1950, a competition for a new coat of arms was announced. The design by Jan Szancenbach from Kraków was selected from 51 submissions and set as the new city coat of arms on February 2, 1960.

The split shield showed half a golden eagle at the front in blue and at the back in red a black pike and a golden branch of laurel crossed diagonally. With the new coat of arms the new state affiliation should be legitimized. The Upper Silesian eagle established a connection between the young industrial city and the old Upper Silesian Piast family, which in turn goes back to the Polish Piasts.

Recourse to the old coat of arms

After the political change in Poland, the pre-war coat of arms was reintroduced on September 26, 1990, albeit in a different shape and a modified, pointed shield.

With the introduction of a new statute on June 11, 2012, the representation of the coat of arms was revised. The new design corresponds to the first introduction in 1927 and has now also been accepted by the Polish Heraldry Commission Komisja Heraldyczna .

flag

The flag of the city of Zabrze is a tricolor made up of three horizontal bars of equal size in red, blue and gold. The city of Hindenburg OS carried the same colors in a different order.
