The Catholic, former parish church of St. Markus is a listed church building in Erbach , a district of the city of Eltville am Rhein . It was consecrated to the Evangelist Mark . Its symbol, the winged lion, is part of the traditional Erbach coat of arms. Today St. Markus is a branch church of the parish of St. Peter and Paul Rheingau, a new type of parish. Since 2015 St. Peter and Paul in Eltville is also the parish church of Erbach.

Geographical location

The church with the address Hauptstraße 46 is on the north side of the same on a terraced slope between the western entrance to Erbach - diagonally across from Reinhartshausen Castle - and the market , both from there and from the entrance to the village.

The old schoolhouse, the cemetery, the St. Markus Catholic day care center , the courtyard side of the houses on the market and opposite the main street the parish center with the former parish barn and the parsonage are grouped clockwise around the church property, starting from the southwest on the main street .

In the cemetery adjacent to the church there is a crucifixion group by the sculptor Hans Backoffen .

history

A chapel with its own baptismal and burial rights has been documented in Erbach since 1060/1072, which until 1250 belonged to the Eltville parish. Then Erbach became an independent parish and the chapel became a parish church. Markus has been attested to as their patron saint since 1258 . Deeds of indulgence from 1281, 1304 and 1324 indicate a structural expansion of the original chapel, which was converted into a hall church.

The conversion to a three-aisled low hall church with a length of three bays with a small choir took place in the years 1477 to 1506. Construction apparently began with the west tower, in the basement of which the year 1477 can be found, while the third bay of the south aisle the year 1506 having.

The west tower, the oldest remaining part of the church, has a square floor plan in the late Gothic style. On the west side of the tower and in the longitudinal axis of the nave, a pointed arched portal leads out barrier-free to the paved steep ramp between the main street and the cemetery. Sandstone colored Kaffgesimse divide the white plaster facade of the tower in three floors, in 28.50 meters by a tracery - sill be completed. The masonry is crowned by a pointed, octagonal, slate-roofed spire , which has a tower button 56 meters high and a cross above it. The square base line of the tower spire is set back inwards over the top of the wall, forms a base storey with vertical walls and thus offers space for a passage secured by the parapet. On each side of this basement there is a pointed dormer window , each of which houses the clock face of the tower clock , and each corner is adorned with a pointed vigilante house . As a further roof decoration , the tower helmet has four pointed helmeted small roof openings all around.

From 1721 to 1723 the church was extended by adding two yokes. One was added from 1727 to 1728. The vaults of the central nave were raised by six meters, so the church gives the impression of a basilica . The building is a good example of the post-Gothic persistence in the late baroque .

St. Markus in Erbach forms together with St. Peter and Paul in Eltville, St. Vincentius in Hattenheim and St. Valentinus in Kiedrich the community association "Pastoraler Raum Eltville", since 2012 the Pastoral Raum Oestrich / Winkel / Eltville / Wallufthal . From the amalgamation of the pastoral rooms Oestrich-Winkel, Eltville and Wallufthal, the parish of St. Peter and Paul Rheingau was created in 2016. The parish church of this " New Type Parish " is St. Peter and Paul in Eltville.

The following local churches and parishes are united in this new parish:
