National research focus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Switzerland , a national research focus (NFS; Pôle de recherche national ; Polo di ricerca nazionale ; National Center of Competence in Research ) is a research funding program carried out by the Swiss National Science Foundation and on behalf of the federal government. The aim of the NCCR is to sustainably strengthen Switzerland as a research location in areas of strategic importance for the future of Swiss science, economy and society.

Each NCCR consists of one or more competence centers and a network of partners from the university or non-university sector. An NCCR is assigned to a clearly identified and thematically delimited research area.

Long-term research projects of the highest quality and with special emphasis on interdisciplinary, but also new, innovative approaches within the disciplines involved are funded. In addition, the NCCR should get involved in the areas of promoting young talent, transferring knowledge and promoting equality.

The NCCR are funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation for a maximum of 12 years. In addition to the federal contribution, the NCCR are also financed by the universities' own funds and third-party funds.

List of NFS

So far, 42 NCCRs have been launched in a total of five program series, with the first two series now being completed. On December 16, 2019, Federal Councilor Guy Parmelin announced the launch of six new national research priorities in the fifth series, the start of which is planned for 2020.
