National research focus on microbiomes

The National Research (NCCR) Microbiomes: Microbial Communities in Health and Environment (also: National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) Microbiomes: Microbial Communities in Health and Environment / Pôle de Recherche National (PRN) Microbiomes: Microbial Communities in Health and Environment ) is a Swiss, inter-university research program on the subject of microbiomes . The national research focus Microbiomes wants to investigate the interaction of microorganisms and their effects in different systems (humans, animals, plants, environment) by means of an experimental and interdisciplinary approach.

The NCCR Microbiomes is a home institution at the University of Lausanne and the ETH Zurich and is headed by Professor Jan Roelof van der Meer. The national network includes numerous other research groups from other universities. The launch of the NCCR Microbiome was announced by Federal Councilor Guy Parmelin at a media conference on December 16, 2019 . The start of research is planned for 2020. The NCCR Microbiomes is being supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation for an initial funding period (2020–2023) with 16.1 million Swiss francs. The total budget for this period is CHF 31.2 million.
