Rauenthaler Baiken

The Baiken is a vineyard in the Rheingau and is located southwest of Rauenthal and Martinsthal , east of Kiedrich and northwest of Eltville am Rhein . It belongs to the Steinmächer area .

Name origin

The Old High German word bougen for to bend gave the Rauenthaler Baiken its name, as the vineyard lies in the bend of the Rauenthaler Berg towards the Sülzbach . The latter rises northwest of Rauenthal and flows into the Rhine at Eltville .

Vineyard

The 15 hectare Rheingau vineyards are at an altitude of 135 to 170  m above sea level. NHN (average height 160 m) and a slope of 4 ° to 20 ° (average slope 15 °) on the slopes of the Bubenhäuser Höhe and is characterized as a steep south-facing slope by perfect solar radiation and easily warm subsoil. The medium to deep and stony soils, which are composed of slate weathering, phyllites, quartzites and loess loam, ensure mineral acidity and a great variety of aromas in the wines that grow here.

In Baiken there are also buildings of the Hessian State Winery , because the Rauenthal wines already had a worldwide reputation in the late 19th century, so that the royal Prussian Dominialverwaltung - with the proceeds from the sale of the Wiesbadener Neroberge to the city of Wiesbaden in 1900 - the winery Wilhelmj in Rauenthal acquired.

Until the changes by the German Wine Law and the establishment of an official vineyard register for each individual municipality in 1971, the registered location Baiken contained the following old individual locations, some of which also belonged to other municipalities: Acker , Baiken , Hühnerberg , Steinhaufen , Tries , Wagenkehr and Wieshell .
