Obergladbach is a district of the community in Schlangenbad in the Rheingau-Taunus district in southern Hesse with over 400 inhabitants. There is a Nikolauskapelle in Obergladbach , which belongs to the Catholic parish of St. Agidius in Niedergladbach.

geography

Obergladbach lies at an altitude of 350 meters in the Gladbachtal on the eastern edge of the hinterland forest . The only access road, the L 3035, leads from Hausen vor der Höhe from the southeast, via Niedergladbach on to the Wispertal .

history

Obergladbach is first mentioned in a document in 1239. The name goes back to the dialect word glad (clear, shiny). The place arose as a settlement of forest workers and charcoal burners from Thuringia, who had been settled here to use the hinterland forest .

Obergladbach was initially one of the 15 super-high villages of the Rheingau and then to the Niedergrafschaft Katzenelnbogen . In 1583, Obergladbach and Niedergladbach were exchanged for two Palatinate villages through the Merlau Treaty between Kurmainz and the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel, and again immediately Mainz territory. Because of this, both places remained Catholic.

Obergladbach was outside the Rheingau Gebück and so economically lagged behind the relative prosperity of the Rheingau. The only source of wealth was charcoal burning .

To Obergladbach belongs the Hof Mappen , which the monks of the Eberbach monastery placed directly on the outer border of the Rheingau Gebück , which caused annoyance in the Rheingau, as this represented a constant threat to the Landwehr. Behind the Mapper Hof, the Rheingau built the Mapper Schanze , the best preserved gate of the Rheingau Gebück . After the Thirty Years' War, the portfolio was sold to the von Greiffenclau gentlemen who lived at Schloss Vollrads . After the Second World War, the farm passed into other hands several times and has been used as a stud ever since.

In the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse , the community of Obergladbach and other communities voluntarily joined the community of Schlangenbad on July 1, 1972. For the district of Obergladbach, as for the other districts, a local district with a local advisory board and local councilor was set up.

Culture and sights

Around 1703, during the reign of Mainz Elector Philipp Karl , the honorable young companion Johannes Messinger , a charcoal burner, donated the building of the Catholic Chapel of St. Nikolaus in Nikolausstrasse 2 in the middle of the village . It is a small plastered hall building with a three-sided choir closure and onion roof turrets. The eastern outer wall shows a rural baroque wooden figure of St. Nicholas in a figural niche .
