The Lauksburg is a small castle ruin near the town of Lorch in the Rheingau in the west of Hesse .

Geographical location

The ruin is located in the Taunus , opposite the Laukenmühle , in the deeply incised and wooded Wispertal below the high-lying district of Espenschied and ten kilometers northeast of the core town of Lorch on the Rhine . It stands as a spur castle at 200  m above sea level. NN a good 50 meters above the Wisper stream and the small settlement in the valley.

History and present

The history of the castle complex is largely in the dark; The hill fort was probably built at the beginning of the 12th century. The ore monastery of Mainz was named as the former owner . A document from 1575 mentions the castle as dilapidated. The ruin was not rebuilt in the following years, not least because it was never of strategic importance and, due to its small size, could not be used as a permanent residence. The castle complex is almost 30 meters long and 15 meters wide. Today the ruin of the residential tower , which still towers about 10 meters and has a floor area of 7.5 × 6 meters, is the most striking feature of the ruin. Only small remains of the curtain wall have survived.

The privately owned castle is in great danger of collapsing and has not been open to the public for years (as of June 2010).
