Espenschied is a district of the town of Lorch in the Rheingau-Taunus district in southern Hesse with around 530 inhabitants. For the formerly independent municipality Espenschied there is a separate local district with a local advisory board .

geography

Espenschied lies above the Wispertal at an altitude of around 400  m in the western Hintertaunus . The only access road, the L 3031, leads from the Laukenmühle in the Wispertal from the south, on over the Hessian border to Welterod and Strüth in the Rhein-Lahn district .

history

The existence of the place can be traced back to the year 1187 as villa Espelscheid . In the 12th century, the Rheingrafen owned a farm here. From 1165 to 1183 it came to the Counts of Nassau in pledge. In the 13th century, the Lords of Eppstein temporarily owned Espenschied - probably as a Mainz fief. Espenschied had been part of the Lauksburg rule since the 14th century and was only connected to the ore monastery of Mainz via feudal ties . As a largely independent rule, it was in the hands of the von Greiffenklau lords until 1508 and then passed to the lords of Heuchelheim. After Sebastian von Heuchelheim's death in 1575, Espenschied was drafted as a settled fief and assigned to the Electoral Mainz Office of Lorch. Since then Espenschied has shared the history of the Rheingau .

In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Espenschied was incorporated into the city of Lorch on January 1, 1977 at the same time as the municipalities of Ransel and Wollmigart .

Espenschied was officially recognized as a climatic health resort from 1974 to 2014 . Today the place is classified as a resort .
