The Catholic St. Nicholas Church in Espenschied , a district of Lorch am Rhein , is a branch church of the parish of Saint Elisabeth von Schönau in the Limburg diocese . Parish church is the former monastery church of the Schönau monastery in Strüth . In addition to Espenschied, the church towns of Dahlheim , Ehrenthal , Filsen , Holzhausen , Kamp-Bornhofen , Kaub , Kestert , Lykershausen , Nastätten , Osterspai , Prath , St. Goarshausen , Strüth, Pilgrimage Church of Bornhofen , Weisel and Wellmich belong to the one founded on January 1, 2018 Parish of a new type.

history

Espenschied belonged to the mother church in St. Martin in Lorch until 1573 and is then referred to as an independent parish . In 1652/53 a St. Nicholas chapel was built and pastoral care was provided by the Schönau monastery. In 1672 Espenschied was subordinated to the parish of St. Katharina (Ransel) as a branch . In 1730 a bell was cast by Christoph Roth from Mainz. In 1746 today's St. Nicholas Church was built in place of the above-mentioned chapel and consecrated in 1748 . The first organ was purchased in the second half of the 18th century. In 1825 Espenschied came to Schönau monastery as a branch church . In 1881 the church windows were renewed. A general renovation of the interior took place in 1962/64 by the responsible restorer Sucker from Mainz. At the same time, a new organ was purchased. In 1967 lightning struck the bell rider and set it on fire. The courageous intervention of the fire brigade prevented major damage.

architecture

The St. Nikolauskirche rises on the highest point of Espenschied, on the northern edge of the village. The churchyard behind it still serves as a cemetery today. The building from 1746 is a simple, rectangular hall building with a five-eighth closure made of plastered quarry stone masonry with arched windows. The slate roof is surrounded by a hood - ridge turret with a plurality of divided lantern crowned. A small rectangular sacristy is attached to the south . To the west, through a newer vestibule, there is access to the main entrance. A simple hollow ceiling spans the interior. There is a wooden organ gallery above the main entrance. The choir is separated from the nave by a recessed round choir arch .

Furnishing

The original furnishings from the time the church was built, with a pulpit, gallery, baptismal font, choir stalls and high altar, have largely been preserved.

  • High altar (1st quarter of the 18th century) with an oil painting: Crucifixion (1655 signed Rambold). Coronation of the altar: Immaculate in a halo (wood, mid-18th century attributed to Martin Biterich's workshop)
  • 2 figures on the hall walls: St. Nikolaus u. St. Johannes von Nepomuk (wood, mid-18th century, also attributed to Martin Biterich's workshop).
  • 2 simple side altars: left Our Lady on globe with snake, right St. Joseph . (Both made of wood, 2nd half of the 18th century, Johann Georg Biterich (* 1724 or 1729 in Mainz, † 1789 in Mainz) a son and successor to Martin Biterich)
  • St. Anthony of Padua figure in the choir
  • Smaller bishop figure (wood, 2nd half of the 15th century), under the gallery, probably the patron saint Nicholas from the previous chapel.
  • Pulpit, gallery and 2 choir stalls (wood, mid-18th century)
  • Baptismal font (sandstone, 1663)

Bells

The ringing consists of three bells. According to Hubert Foersch's assessment of the bells, the composition of the notes is a curiosity. The bell in the middle sounds out of tune due to the overlapping of notes in the ringing. The big and small bells, however, form a "quite useful" double bell. The smallest bell was cast in 1730 by the bell founder Georg Christoph Roth from Mainz. The other two are from 1926, the caster is not known.
