Neuhaus Castle

In the castle Neuhaus is an Outbound hilltop castle in Kiedrich in the Rheingau . The castle, which can be assigned to the Middle Ages , can only be perceived as a castle stable , with clear traces still being visible in the area.

Location and description

The castle is located in the Eltville city forest north of Kiedrich and west of Rauenthal as a spur castle at 200  m above sea level. NHN high sloping spur of the western Himmelsberg , approx. 50 meters from the Förster-Keil-Douglas fir , between the Sülzbach and a northern tributary. The castle stood in a dominant position over the Sülzbach valley.

The system is oriented almost in a north-south direction. There was also access from the north. A ditch about 10 meters wide and 3 meters deep separated the outer bailey from the ridge. The 50 meter long and 18 meter wide outer bailey joined the moat . This had an oval shape. This was followed by a section trench, again about 10 meters wide, but about 3.5 meters deep. Located at the tip of the spur in the south of the facility, followed the rectangular core castle , which took up an area of about 33 × 14 meters. In the middle of the main castle are the foundations of a square keep . The walls of this tower had a side length of about 9 meters.

Based on the find situation on site, it can be assumed that the core castle was probably walled . The outer bailey does not show this find situation, which is why it is not masonry, but a wooden fence.

History and use

Neuhaus Castle was probably only in use for a short time. It is mentioned among the possessions of the Mainz Cathedral Chapter in a document dated December 25, 1274 as a newly built castle near Scharfenstein Castle . It can therefore be assumed that the castle was rebuilt by the archbishopric .

With the exception of the naming as a new house ( Nuwenhus ) nothing is known about the building history of the castle. In 1322 a monastery near the castle was relocated, which goes back to the threat posed by Scharfenstein Castle. This suggests that the castle could no longer fulfill its function at that time.

It is also conceivable that there is a connection with the local salt spring .

Monument protection

The area of the facility is a ground monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, and accidental finds are reported to the monument authorities.
