Johannisberg Castle

The Castle Johannisberg is a fortification ( Spur castle ), located in the Rheingau community Geisenheim between the districts Johannisberg and Marienthal in the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis . Today the facility, which can be assigned to the Rheingrafen , can only be seen as a castle stables .

Location and description

The Burgstall is located about 1500 meters northwest of Johannisberg, the former Rheingrafenhausen , on the northern side of the K 984, at the height of the Reuss mill on the spur of a ridge, the Schloßberg . The terrain slopes steeply towards the west, south and east sides, so that only the north side is at risk of attack. Due to a natural elevation opposite the ridge, there are also defensive advantages here. The castle site was about 70 meters long in north-south direction and up to 18 meters wide. Today there are still depressions in the ground that suggest foundations and buildings.

The castle was located on the medieval network of paths on the Elsterbach , which led to the Rennweg . The Rennweg was one of the central streets owned by the Rheingrafen in the Rheingau.

history

Today nothing is known about the history of the castle itself. Destruction by the ore monastery in Mainz is conceivable . In the years 1111 to 1137, the Archbishop of Mainz, Adalbert I , enforced the claims of the monastery in the Rheingau and also pushed back the Rhine Counts. Remnants of the masonry may have been used in the construction of the Schloßberg manganese mine , which was operated at the foot of the castle from 1856 to 1910.

The first indications of the existence of the Burgstall come from Ferdinand Kutsch in 1961. Under the direction of Georg Ludwig Duchscherer , excavations were initiated in 1957 at the Burgstall. However, the results were never published. It is believed that Duchscherer burned the documents for unknown reasons.

Monument protection

The area of the ramparts is a ground monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, and accidental finds are reported to the monument authorities.
