The Elsterbach is a good nine kilometers long, north-north-west and right tributary of the Rhine in the Rheingau .

geography

course

The Elsterbach has its origin a few 100 m north of the Geisenheim district Stephanshausen on a wooded southern slope of the Rheingau mountains at an altitude of approx. 400 m. It flows south through the center of Stephanshausen before disappearing again into the forest, where it is still fed by a right tributary - the Grundscheidbach.

Later, the bottom of the valley opens into a narrow clearing and the stream leads through the Marienthal monastery . Immediately south of the pilgrimage site , the Elsterbach crosses county road 984 and turns into the forest in a south-easterly direction.

Along the course of the stream, which is accompanied by the district road, there are several former mills, some of which are now used as excursion restaurants until it meets the first vineyards and reaches the Johannisberger Grund district . The stream then leaves the Geisenheim area and flows again through vineyards past the Johannisberger Klause to Winkel . There it crosses under the Koblenz-Wiesbaden railway line , then the town's main street and finally federal highway 42 before it flows into the Rhine.
