history

The castle was built in 1279 as a fortress by the Archbishop of the Archbishopric of Mainz against Rheinberg Castle to set up Bliden (small cannons) and other entrenchments . Blideneck Castle blocked the only access route to Rheinberg Castle. Rheinberg had to capitulate in the summer of 1280, but was quickly rebuilt.

The reason for the stronghold was the Sponheim feud between the higher nobility of Kurmainz and the surrounding area against Archbishop Werner von Eppstein , who was supported by the cities. In the battle of Sprendlingen was Rheingrafenstein Siegfried of Rheinberg, one of the leaders, have been captured. The Archbishop of Mainz was punished against him and his castle.

After the siege of Rheinberg Castle, the Archbishop of Mainz, Werner von Eppstein, tried to keep the stronghold. On July 23, 1280, he succeeded in winning Count Adolf von Nassau and on August 13, 1280 Emmerich von Heppenheft as Burgmanns for Blideneck Castle. With the death of Archbishop Werner von Eppstein, however, Blideneck lost all importance, was not mentioned in a document and fell into disrepair.
