They are part of the Taunus main ridge , over which the border between the town of Eltville am Rhein and the municipality of Kiedrich in the Hessian Rheingau-Taunus district runs. The mountain is the location of the Dreibornskopf ring wall , and it was formerly the location of the Förster-Harras-Turm observation tower .

geography

location

The Dreibornsköpfe rise in the Rheingau Mountains , the western section of the High Taunus , and in the Rhine-Taunus Nature Park . Its summit is in the area of Eltville 7.4 km northwest of the Eltville city center, 4.2 km northwest of the Eltville district of Rauenthal , 4.8 km north-northwest of the core town of Kiedrich, and 1.5 km east of Hausen vor der Höhe and 2 , 2 km south-south-west of Bärstadt , both of which belong to the community of Schlangenbad , and 3 km west-south-west of the center of Schlangenbad.

The neighboring mountains and elevations of the Dreibornsköpf include the Galgenkopf ( 490.9  m ) in the north, Kopf ( 490.5  m ) in the northeast, the Hansenkopf ( 495  m ) in the east, and the Bubenhäuser Höhe ( 267.6  m ) in the southeast , the Erbacher Kopf ( 579.8  m ) in the southwest, the Rabenkopf ( 466.2  m ) in the northwest, and the Hundskopf ( 503.8  m ) in the north-northwest.

As Kiedricher field names exist: Upper , Middle and Lower Dreibornskopf .

Natural allocation

The Dreibornsköpf belong in the natural spatial main unit group Taunus (No. 30) and in the main unit Hoher Taunus (301) to the subunit Rheingau Mountains (301.1). To the southeast, the landscape falls into the subunit Eberbacher Schuttfuß (301.10) and to the northwest into the natural area Südwestliche Seitzenhahner Mulde (304.41), which is part of the main unit Oberaarmulde (304.4) to the subunit Westlicher Hintertaunus (304).

Mountain height and peaks

The three- corn heads are 547.6  m high. While the summit region in the north belongs to Eltville, the two mountain noses that fan out to the south of the ridge line and are around 500  m high with their steep slopes, which are referred to in the maps as Dreibornsköpfe , are located in the Kiedricher forest area. About 1 km north of the summit in the Sauerwasserpfad forest district lies a 526.5  m high foothill.

Flowing waters

On the north flank of the Dreibornsköpfe, southwest of Bärstadt, lies the source of the Walluf, which later passes the mountain in the east . The small Bremserbach rises on its eastern flank, the water of which flows into the Walluf through the Warm Brook , which swells in the northeast . On the south-east flank are the sources of the Great and Small Buchwaldgraben, whose combined water feeds the Sülzbach , which rises on the south flank . The source of the Sillgraben, the left source brook of the Kiedricher Bach, is located on the transition area to the southwestern Erbacher Kopf . Walluf, Sülzbach and Kiedricher Bach flow into the Rhine . The Gladbach rises on the north side of the transition area to the Erbacher Kopf , and the Fischbach on the north-northwest flank . The water of both streams reaches the Rhine through the Wisper .

Protected areas

The landscape of the Dreibornsköpf slopes to the south to the nature reserve Weihersberg bei Kiedrich ( CDDA -Nr. 166213; designated 1955; 93.77  hectares ), which is almost congruent with the local fauna-flora-habitat- area Weihersberg bei Kiedrich (FFH-Nr. 5914-301; 93.75 ha).

Ringwall Dreibornskopf

Slightly to the southwest below the summit of the 498  m high southwestern nose of the Dreibornskopf lies the Dreibornskopf ring wall in the Kiedricher area at about 490  m height . It is located near Hausen vor der Höhe, about 1.3 km southeast of the mountain pass of Landesstraße 3035. A dating of the complex is not possible to this day due to the unclear local representation, as well as the lack of finds.

Forester Harras Tower

About 380 m south-south-east of the ring wall, in the Kiedricher area above the Sillgraben, at a height of about 420  m , was the Förster-Harras-Turm, built in 1985, a wooden structure named after the former Kiedrich forester Rudolf Harras. The tower was demolished in November 2006 due to structural defects. Today only remains of the foundation are left.

Traffic and walking

South-west past the Dreibornsköpf leads from Eltville am Rhein through the valley of the Kiedricher Bach and its source brook Sillgraben through Kiedrich the state road  3035, which runs mainly in a south-east-north-west direction and in the Upper Rheingau about 1.5 km west-south-west of the mountain summit Taunushauptkamm mountain pass (approx.  510  m ) crossed. Beyond this, it leads through Hausen vor der Höhe, close to the pass, and from there on in the Gladbach valley through Ober- and Niedergladbach to the Wisper valley . In Hausen, the L 3037, which runs north of the mountain to Bärstadt , branches off from the road .

The European long-distance hiking trail E3 leads over the northern flank of the Dreibornsköpf, through Hausen and south past Bärstadt . The Rheinhöhenweg runs over the mountain and on the Taunushauptkamm .
