The Schiersteiner Kreuz is a clover-shaped motorway junction and a busy road junction in Hesse with around 123,000 vehicles per day.

It is a junction between the A 66 and the A 643 southwest of Wiesbaden .

The name is derived from the nearby Wiesbaden district of Schierstein . Both motorways have two lanes per lane in the intersection area, which means that there are always long traffic jams during the daily rush hour .

expansion

August 2013: The old bridge of the A643 is still there. View in the direction of Mainz.
September 2019: New bridge of the A643
Construction work in August 2014, the A66 is down. View in the direction of Frankfurt. The traffic on the A643 is routed over two temporary bridges. Here in the picture you can only see the direction of travel to Mainz.

In the course of the new construction of the Schiersteiner Bridge and the widening from two to three lanes, the Schiersteiner Kreuz must also be widened. This should also relieve the congested road sections from Mainz to Frankfurt and the reverse route through new traffic structures.

The first measures were taken in March 2012 by removing the existing trees and bushes in the intersection area (see the green areas on the map in the info box). Then the construction of the bridge began, which leads from the Äppelallee junction over the railway tracks of the right-hand Rhine route in order to accommodate two lanes in the direction of Frankfurt. Then the abutments of the temporary bridges were built, which take up the traffic of the A643. The corresponding parts of the bridge were hung on the night of April 12th to 13th, 2014, for this purpose the cross was blocked for 12 hours from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. These temporary bridges started traffic in May 2014 so that the two old bridge parts can be torn down and the new construction can begin.

Traffic volume

According to a count in 2015, the cross was used by around 110,000 vehicles every day.
